Subject: Exp 6 Exp 7 ISS Status April 11th,2003 Submitted by Arthur - N1ORC Subject: Exp 6 Exp 7 ISS Status Current, Future ISS Crews Complete Active Workweek The Expedition Six crewmembers have completed another busy workweek aboard the International Space Station. Their major activity was a spacewalk conducted by Commander Ken Bowersox and NASA ISS Science Officer Don Pettit. During the spacewalk, they continued the external outfitting of the station. On the science front, they conducted sessions with the Effects of EVA and Long-Term Exposure to Microgravity on Pulmonary Function, or PuFF, experiment and the Investigating the Structure of Paramagnetic Aggregates from Colloidal Emulsions, or InSPACE, experiment. PuFF is studying the effect of long-term exposure to microgravity and the effects of extravehicular activity on lung function, and InSPACE is studying how particles and clumps of particles respond to an external magnetic field. Preparations continued for the Expedition Seven crew's arrival on April 28 and the Expedition Six crew's departure on May 3. Russian flight controllers fired the Progress 10 cargo ship's engines Thursday to raise the outpost's orbit by 2.6 kilometers (1.6 miles). The reboost maneuver and one that occurred earlier in the month were performed to put the station in the correct orbit for the Expedition Seven's arrival and Expedition Six's undocking. Meanwhile, Expedition Seven Commander Yuri Malenchenko and Flight Engineer Ed Lu went to Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, to inspect the Soyuz TMA-2 spacecraft that will carry them to the station. Expedition Seven is slated to launch at 10:35 p.m. CDT (0335 GMT) April 25. --------------------------------------------- Expedition Seven Next ISS Crew The International Space Station's next set of residents, the Expedition Seven crew, is slated to arrive April 28 at 12:50 a.m. CDT (0550 GMT) aboard the Soyuz TMA-2 spacecraft. The crew consists of Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and U.S. Astronaut Ed Lu. Malenchenko and Lu are scheduled to launch from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, at 10:35 p.m. CDT April 25 (0335 GMT April 26). Malenchenko, who will serve as commander, is a veteran of two spaceflights -- Mir 16 and STS-106. Lu, who will serve as a flight engineer and NASA ISS Science Officer, is a veteran of two shuttle flights -- STS-84 and STS-106. They will replace the Expedition Six crew, which has been at the station since Nov. 25, 2002. Expedition Six Commander Ken Bowersox, Flight Engineer Nikolai Budarin and NASA ISS Science Officer Don Pettit will return to Earth on May 3 aboard the Soyuz TMA-1 spacecraft currently docked to the station.
