In 2003 I visited Thassos island EU174 for the first time from May, 30th to June, 18th. I had the pleasure to meet Emil DJ4PI and his wife Doris DO??? being very nice people and staying in the same hotel. It was more or less a QRP operation, with about 10 to 20 watts output, depending from the status of the rechargeable batteries and the frequency. About 550 QSOs were made within a three weeks period of time. Most of it in CW. I worked some DX, for example JA and ZL on 30m. |

I was using a SGC SG2020ADSP2 transceiver, a MFJ 901B Tuner, two or three NiMh 3,3ah accus parallel, a palm radio mini-paddle with code cube and an inverted-L or multi band dipol antenne feeded by a ladder line and a DK9SQ glasfibre tower, about 10m high. For my second stay in 2004, I added my old ICOM IC730 and a power supply. So I had the chance to increase the power to about 80 watts from the hotel. I used a kind of loop antenna. Unfortunately it is only easy to work from the hotel area to the east, because of the slooping ground, as you maybe can see in the next picture. |

From this place it is very hard to get into the USA, because the hotel is simply on the wrong side of the hill. Therefore I took almost every day my portable equipment (SGC 2020, running with rechargeable battery power) between about 12.00 and 14.00 UTC and climbed on top of a nearby hill. From this place it is easier to work to the north or north west (Western Europe, North America) even with QRP power, as you can image looking at the next picture. |

From this place I worked about one dozen Ws on October, 5th in CW with just 10W output. I used 12m which just opened a little bit. Of course there are better locations. But it would take more time to get up there.

In 2005 I hope to be able to work also on 80m. To improve my receiving ability, I am probably going to use an additional ASP (analog signal processing) device. Because before even with QRP power I was not always able to copy the stations calling me. I dont know why, but must of the time the report I received was about 10 db better than the report I was able to give. |
