411GHz Corner Cube Harmonic Mixer

Sub millimeter wave harmonic mixer was constructed using a corner cube open structure. The results of this preliminary design were presented at Microwave Update 2001. The original article can be viewed here, 411GHz Corner Cube Mixer.

Actual manufacturing process envolves one electroformed corner cube and two brass bolcks. The corner cube is soldered into the top block, so the final assembly if composed of two blocks. Detailed drawing can be seen here Corner mechanical drawing.

Some devices possible to use in this structure. Left, a dot matrix diode (about 6000x magnification). Right a beam lead diode (about 2000x magnification).
Dot matrix diode type is the best option for the presented structure but it is the most difficult to handle properly.
