Cuba was discovered at October 28, 1492 by Cristobal Colon, the first name was "Juana" and finaly was named Cuba (Variation of the aborigine name"Cubanacan")

Situated in the mouth of the Gulf of Mexico, right in the center of the Caribbean, Cuba, in reality, is an archipelago formed by the island of Cuba, the Isle of Juventud and by 4,195"cayos" and smaller islands, which total a surface area of 110,922 sq. km. The Cuban islands extend for 1,250 km from capo di Sant'Antonio to Punta de Quemado. Its width varies from 32 to 210 km. In this mainly level and fertile territory there are three mountain groups: the Sierra de los Organos in the west, the Sierra del escambray in the center and the Sierra maestra in the east, where the Pico Real del Turquino can be found, at 1974 m(6580 ft) the highest peak in the country.

The climate is moderately sub-tropical and has two clear defined seasons: the dry season which lasts from November to April and the rainy season which lasts from May to October. Average annual rainfall is 1,375 mm and the average annual temperature is 25.0C (77.0F). The average highs and lows are 35.0C (95.0F) and 19.0C (66.0F).

From a political and administrative point of view Cuba is republic, divided into 14 provinces and one  special  municipality. There  are  over  11 170 000 inhabitants. Of them 51% mulatto, 37% descend from Spanish, 11% black and 1% of Chinese.

The 77% of  Cubans live in urban area and there are 97 inhabitants per kmē.

There are more than 6,300  species of  flora, 51%  of  which  are endemic: for this reason Cuba is the principal base for botanical research in the Antilles. with respect to fauna, there are 4 species of mammal, 350 birds, 106 reptiles, 442 amphibians, 1,400 molluscs, 15,000 insects and 1,440 arachnids. There are no animals which are poisonous to man. Wildlife preservation is an important political objective in the country.

The Cuban economy was based on sugar cane  and its industrialisation (In 1990 sugar was the 75% of our export). The tourism is in full growth and now is our principal industry. Other significant plantations are tobacco, citrus fruits, coffee, cocoa, and rice. The fishing industry is also important, as is the production of rum. Other basic products are nickel, refractive chrome, manganese, tabbyite, marble, agave textiles and their derivatives. In recent years the pharmaceutical industry and biotechnology have developed.

In 1998 we had 60 858 km of highway and 4667 km of train way.

The national emblem consists of an oval-shaped shield with golden key in the upper part, symbolising the key position of Cuba between the two Americas, and the rising sun which symbolises the dawn of a new nation. The five blue and white stripes commemorate the 5 departments in which the country was divided in colonial times. The national flag flew for the hands of revolutionaries against the Spanish colonial power headed by Narciso Lopez. The royal palm is the symbol of nobility and serene steadfastness, characteristics of the Cuban people. The music and words of the national anthem were composed by the patriot Perucho Figueredo. Other national symbols are: the "mariposa", a delicate and fragrant flower, the "Tocororo" (priotelus temnurus) a bird which echoes the colours of the Cuban flag in its plumage, and the "royal palm", typical of the
Cuban landscape. The official language is Spanish. The currency is the Cuban peso.
