GREETINGS
As you may have noticed, I ran out of time, as well as much to put in the Newsletter last month, so decided to save some stamps. Im also getting used to a new Word Processor, so bear with me Hi. The biggest thing the Club has going on these days is the 1998 Hamfest, which is fast approaching.
September Meeting
The next meeting of the C.M.R.A. will be held in the community room of Boone Electric Co-op on Range Line Street Tuesday, September 8th, at 7:00 p.m. Much of the meeting will deal with the plans for the Hamfest.
Next CLUB Breakfast
We wont be getting together for the usual monthly Club Breakfast at Country Kitchens this month, since the second Saturday of the month falls on September 12th this time around, the same day as , you guessed it, the Hamfest. Plan on coming out to Good Time Country early for set-up, and I suspect an impromptu Breakfast might pop up Hi. Be sure to mark your calendar for the next one, which will be Saturday, October 10th at 8:00 a.m.
HAMFEST 98
Our Hamfest Chairman, John, N0EG, would like an idea on who is planning to help out during the Hamfest. There will be a little to do Friday evening, and lots to do Saturday morning. Friday, we will be setting up the Talk-in station (and trying to get away from some RFI problems we had with the P.A. system last year), looking into where / how to set up a tail gate area, setting up tables, and helping set up any early arriving vendors. We plan on meeting about 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, we need to try to get lots of Club members there by 6:00 a.m. Last year, we didnt have the early morning help we needed, and as a result, we had to run everyone out of the building after they had set up when we had our "official" door opening to collect their entry fee. It worked out OK, but we hope to avoid that situation this year.
We will be taking care of any last minute items at the next meeting, as well as asking for volunteers for particular assignments. Some of the slots we hope to fill are:
I believe we have all the door prizes in hand, and the Hamfest Mailer has been sent out. Im really looking forward to the Hamfest, and hope we can improve on last years effort, which was a nice one. Try to make it to the meeting, because the more support we have early, the better things usually turn out !
Code Practice Net
The CMCPN is presently still being held, although check-ins are dwindling. I feel the Net has been beneficial, and I had a great time as Net Control, but unfortunately, I have lots of new demands on my time, lately. We are looking for new Net Control Stations for the Net. Dewey, WM0H, has offered to help, but we havent got his p.c./h.t. interface working correctly, yet. It wont take very long to correct. If you would like to try your hand as Net Control for either the CMCPN (Tuesday and Thursday nights) or the CMRN (Wednesday nights) please let Dewey or me know.
Boy Scouts
Earl, KF0GE, contacted me a short while back, and tells me he is looking for help in an upcoming "Merit Badge University", which will be held in Fayette in November. Last year, WM0Y and myself helped out. It was a pretty fun time. There were several Troops camped out on the C.M.C. campus for the weekend, and while they were there, they were trying to work on as many Merit Badges as time permitted. We had two H.F. rigs set up in the classroom, and gave a short introduction to Ham Radio to the Scouts. If you would like to Elmer a little, contact Earl or myself. By the way, you certainly dont need to be a crusty Old Man with DXCC wallpaper hanging around your three-room shack to help out. In fact, these Scouts would probably respond well to newer Hams, who have less of a tendency to erupt into Ham Speak (jargon) HI.
Another Elmering opportunity with the Scouts will be coming up in October. I am speaking, of course, about JOTA, the annual "Jamboree On The Air." The only time I recall a local JOTA effort, was several years ago, when Mike, N0LBA, set up two City communications trailers at one of the local schools. We had H.F., packet, and two-meter f.m. going in both trailers. When conditions were good, we got to work around the U.S. a bit. When conditions dropped, the Scouts had just as much fun working their buddies in the other trailer. We also had a large group of Girl Scouts join us. It was a lot of fun working with the kids. If there is interest from the Club, let me know. I would be happy to make any necessary arrangements. We could also probably set up a schedule for contacting Earl, KF0GE, at the Prarie Home JOTA site.
Former Member News
N0NMC, Perry, has checked in via the Club Web Page, to let us know he is alive and well in Tennessee. He has about an acre in the country, and is located about 3 miles from a monster ham station. The antenna farm near him has multiple towers, lots of aluminum up, and even a 160-Meter vertical. Some guys have all the luck HI. Perry can be reached at 615-907-5775, pogletree@mci2000.com , and his address is 3711 Idlewood Drive; Murfreesboro TN.,37130.
Greg Nunn, K0GN, also checked in. He has finally received his Singapore Call, 9V1BI. Greg says his FT100MP and R7000 vertical have been doing a good job for him. On his first day out, he managed to work two Texas stations (on 20 Meters around 1200 Z.) With any luck, you could probably manage to talk Greg into a schedule.
73,
Well, thats about all I have for this time around. One last thing I might mention, is that it seems 2 Meters has been a little quieter than usual during the morning and evening commute times. I hope to hear more people getting radioactive. Catch you later !
