November 1997

Greetings, fellow Amateur Radio Buffs ! Looks like this is going to be another short Newsletter this month, with not a whole lot to report on, and not a lot of time to do it in either. So, we're off ...

November Meeting

The next CMRA meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 11th, 1997, at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room of Boone Electric Co-op. A VE exam session will follow the meeting ( provided there are three VE's on hand and any takers.)

December Meeting

Our December Meeting, which is our annual dinner outing, will be held at Golden Corral on December 9th (2nd Tuesday, as usual) at 6:30 p.m., located at the corner of Stadium and Worley Streets. All are Welcome! Bring the XYL's, OM's, Harmonics, etc.!

October Meeting

Well, not too much new happened at the October meeting, which left more time for visiting. One thing worthy of mention, however, was that there were eight new members voted into the Club. We are glad to welcome K0LZ, NW0Q, N0EG, WB6AZF, KC0ACR, N0KRG, KC0BYE, and K0PV into the Club. This brings our membership total to 57. Which brings me to another point. In the not too distant past (a couple of years ago), the Club was in a pretty sad state. Our repeater was down, our meetings were pretty nomadic (you almost had to use an HT to find out where the meeting was going to be held HI!), our hamfest faltered, and our membership was divided. In short, pretty much everything we had in the "Good Old Days" was in decline. Today, our repeater is up (though it doesn't seem to be used as much as it used to be: it used to be pretty easy to scare up an interesting conversation during the a.m. and p.m. commutes), we just had a successful and Fun Hamfest, we have our traditional Meeting Room secured for the next year, and membership is definitely on the rise. In the "Promoting Amateur Radio" area, we have been building up our Last Saturday Breakfasts and our Monday Evenings at the Club Station, we seized a great opportunity to put Ham radio in the Public Eye at this year's Air Show ( and will soon be making plans for next year), and are presently holding Novice/ Tech Classes. In the "We've never done that before" department, we will soon be offering a General License upgrade class. Things are really looking up for the Club, thanks to everyone's efforts!

Club Officers

The Nominating Committee will be formed at the November meeting, with elections held at the January meeting. If you think someone would do a particularly good job at some position, let us know. Better yet, let us know what position YOU would do a good job at ! Give it some thought. The rewards of serving YOUR Club are great.

Novice / Tech Class

The CMRA is holding license classes, on Tuesdays at Boone Hospital at 7:00 p.m. After the First of the New Year, we will be holding a General License Class, based on the ARRL Video Course. Around December 1st, we will also have Morse Code practice on the K0SI repeater (146.760 / .160) about three nights a week. The present plan is to run several short sessions each night, which can be taped for practice on nights that the classes don't run. We have about a dozen students in the Novice / Technician class presently, with about nine of those coming from Hickman High School. It will be nice to get some new people active in the area!

CMRA Home Page

The Club Home Page on the Web is at http://www.qsl.net/cmra (sorry for previous incorrect URL reported here -ed). Look for the Newsletters there, as well as info about Club activities. If you would like something added to the page, talk to Perry, N0NMC.

Club Breakfast

Just a reminder, the Club Breakfast is held on the last Saturday of the month at Country Kitchens, on Providence Road, at 8:00 a.m. Get in on some good eating, and some great company !

Club Station

Another reminder, the Club Station is opened on most Monday evenings, from approximately 7:00 p.m. till whenever. This is another great time to sit around, make a few QSO's on the radio, then make a few more "eyeball QSO's". The station is not opened on the Monday before Club meetings, and usually not on Mondays that fall on holiday weekends. The Station is located in the basement of the Red Cross Building, on Worley Street, next to Machens Ford. We could use more people willing to get the doors open on a regular basis. Talk to WY0B if interested.

Well, that about wraps it up for this month. 73, es CUL, de WY0B ...
