January 1998

Greetings

I hope everyone's New Year is off to a great start! They sure seem to go by quicker and quicker these days. It doesn't seem possible, but this is my twelfth News Letter. There have been more than a few nervous moments, wondering if I was going to get it out on time, but it has been lots of fun. One of my more bone-headed moves happened last month when I tried to run the copying over to Kinko's. I had no idea they were putting in a new building a couple of blocks away from their former location, and the carpet layer who was the only one in the building at 9:00 p.m. the evening I went there apparently didn't know they were still open for business a stone's throw away. He told me the nearest Kinko's was in Jefferson City, and new location certainly never had been home to a printer before. I thought I was in the Twilight Zone. I found a nearby copying machine and put that issue to bed, then I drove around town and found their old (and fully operational) location. Well, I guess it's better being lost in Downtown Columbia than being completely insane Hi Hi.

January Meeting

The Club Elections will be held during the January meeting, which will be held Tuesday, January 13th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room of Boone Electric Co-op. Also, dues are due as of the January meeting (individual dues are $15.00, family membership is $20.00; what a deal !) The last session of the Novice / Technician License Classes was held last Tuesday. Hope we have a good turn out for the VE session after the meeting Tuesday, but some of the students mentioned they have finals this week, so I suspect some of them may put the license exams off a while. I would like to thank the many who helped with the classes. Instructors were K4CHS, KB0PHQ, N0REF, WY0B, N0OLT, and N0EG. KB0TCR acquired permission for us to use the Boone Hospital cafeteria for the classes. K4CHS graciously invited the class to his QTH on the one evening we had a scheduling conflict with the cafeteria, as well as presenting a large number of modules. (my apologies if I inadvertently left anyone out.) John, N0EG, wins the prize for the most modules taught, with about 12. That's a lot of time hitting the books! He also got his feet wet in packet while getting ready for the class. John is a fairly new member to the Club, and we appreciate all his efforts! We are still planning on holding the General Classes. If you or someone you know are interested in upgrading, let me know. We need to order the books at least 3 weeks before the first class. I should be able to send CW over the '76 repeater for the Morse classes, but since we're probably talking 2 or 3 sessions a week I need to know who is interested in working on the code. The info for the written test will be mainly from the ARRL video series.

Elections

As mentioned previously, the elections for Club Officers will be held at the January meeting. Here is a brief rundown of the different offices:

President - presides over meetings, enforces observation of the Club Constitution, and signs all official documents for the Club.

Vice President - assumes all presidential duties in the President's absence (and while not mentioned in the Constitution has been traditionally responsible for lining up programs and refreshments for the Club Meetings.)

Recording Secretary - keeps meeting minutes and membership rolls, reads correspondence at meetings, and fills in for the Corresponding Secretary in his / her absence.

Corresponding Secretary - carries on correspondence, receives applications for membership, mails official notices to the membership, and fills in for the Recording Secretary in his / her absence.

Treasurer - handles all money for the Association and keeps account of same

(These descriptions have been abbreviated from what is contained in the Constitution. Officers should familiarize themselves with the description in the Constitution.)

Well, it's getting late and I'm out of news, so here's wishing the Club a Great Year in 1998. With a little effort on all our parts, we can make this the best ARC in the area ! 73, es CUL, de... WY0B
