Field Day was a lot of fun. Weather turned out great. The day started with putting up antennas, then to operating, then to a great picnic but the operating didn't stop 800+ contacts. We need more operators between midnight and six in the morning. Next year plan on that time.

Hamfest info:
Jim WY0B is checking on tables from Boone Electric. We are looking for a great time.
We Need volunteers. After the meeting we had a lady from the Red Cross (Pat Sullivan) give a talk on the readiness of the Red Cross for disasters and the need for communication. It was very interesting.

IN THE NEWS
At its recent meeting, the ARRL Board of Directors has approved a move to full color for QST, the League's monthly membership journal. The Board also stipulated a minimum 176 pages in each issue. In other action, the ARRL Board put its stamp of approval on ''The Big Project,'' Haynie's ambitious initiative to provide a turnkey Amateur Radio curriculum in American classrooms. Now officially dubbed ''The ARRL Education Project,'' the program will offer a curriculum and equipment that schools can incorporate into existing curricula. The project will be funded by corporate and foundation donations. FCC statistics presented during the session show that Technician and Tech Plus licensees still make up nearly one half of the US amateur population, which totals 710,626--including expired licensees within the two-year grace period. As of July 18, there were 209,550 Techs and 121,175 Tech Pluses. Reflecting the shift in license class because of restructuring, Extras now number 92,165, and Generals 134,015--both up by more than 20% over year-earlier figures. There are 93,834 Advanced ops, and the Novice population remains at just under 60,000.
SOLAR UPDATE
Solar seer Tad Cook, K7VVV, Seattle, Washington, reports: Solar flux and sunspot numbers were down only slightly this week from last. Last week's average sunspot numbers were up over 40 points from the previous week, and this week's are down less than seven. But the big news this week should be the big peak in sunspot numbers on Thursday, July 20, when it reached 401. This is a rare, high number in any solar cycle, and the biggest so far in cycle 23. A cursory examination of the data shows that the sunspot number has not been this high since August 23, 1991, when it was 478. Sunspot numbers over 400 suggest that we may be nearing the cycle peak. The latest projection the author has seen for cycle peak is from the July 4 Preliminary Report and Forecast of Solar Geophysical Data from the NOAA Space Environment Center
FCC LAUNCHES CORES
The FCC has begun implementing the Commission Registration System, to be known as CORES. While the action has few immediate implications for Amateur Radio licensees, CORES registration eventually will replace Universal Licensing System, or ULS, registration.

VE CORNER
Well if you haven't upgraded by now you still have a chance. One more testing session before the Hamfest. There sure have been a lot of upgrades but things have slowed down so you can get your " ticket" from the FCC a lot faster now. We need more General's and Extra's and they must come from Tech's so get out there and encourage more people to get into ham radio so they can have as much fun as we are. Until next time.
