April Meeting Minutes

The meeting opened at 7:06 PM. Introductions went all around. The minutes were read, amended, and approved after the amendment was made (Jim McNabb is the director of the Columbia Joint Communications, not the St. Louis NWS office).

Treasurer’s Report:

Savings: $n/a$

Checking: $1,400

Old Business: The status of the club bank account was briefly discussed. Nothing has changed since last month.

An update on Boone Electric and weather awareness: They have sold out of their weather radios, and they will be ordering more shortly.

Speaking of ham radio and severe weather, ham radio has been mentioned in an article in the Columbia Business Times. It is the April 8th issue, and it’s written by Al Gerond.

Dewey mentioned that we need to practice more on using radiograms. There was something in QST that said that during Katrina, radiograms weren’t used very much at all. It’s kind of sad to hear, because they can come in very handy for sending messages to loved ones in the aftermath of a natural disaster.

New Business: Jim Barner (KØWWV) has moved back to Kansas City, so he will be unable to perform the duties of Vice President. Therefore, the club has voted unanimously to make Dave (KVØS) the new Vice President.

Field Day is coming together pretty well so far. Looks like the location at Rock Bridge State Park has been confirmed, and the Columbia Tribune will be there to do a story. It was discussed that we might send some letters to elected officials (like the County Commissioner), inviting them to attend and see more about what ham radio is all about.

The auction for this year is beginning to be put together. Carol Smith said that she would send out letters to various stores and places of business around May or June, because if they were sent out earlier the businesses might forget about it.

We have a new member voted into our club. His name is Griff Hamlin, and his call is W5VWP.

During the meeting we found out some kind of surprising news. It seems that the CMRA non-profit papers have been un-renewed for quite some time. This means that we are right now not non-for-profit and not tax exempt. One or two of the guys have said that they will go to the Secretary of State’s office to get them renewed.

Don (KMØR) brought up the fact that Jim Lawler (WYØB) had been helping quite a bit recently with the repeater. He wished to thank Jim for his help, and we wish to echo that. Thanks to Jim and Don for helping make the repeater work, for repairing and whatever needed done. Without guys like these, we’d be in a lot worse situation. Thanks, guys.

There is some older station equipment for sale, from an older ham’s shack. The man’s daughter says that she’d like it all to be sold as a set, and that it needs to be sold by May 1st.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:29 PM. Afterward, Dennis (KBØNHW) from FEMA gave a presentation on FEMA and its operations during an emergency situation. It was a great program, very interesting. It’s always good to see how an agency such as FEMA responds to an emergency, especially a natural disaster.

Well, that’s all for this month. Hope to see everyone at the May meeting!

73’s,

Nathan KCØLCS

 Equipment needed:

We are in need of working ham radio equipment for our equipment loan program.  If you can help us with a tax-deductible donation, please let Avery know. Courage Center is a 501c3 charity, and your gifts are deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.  Gifting your used ham gear is a wonderful way to share amateur radio with others.  In general, the items most needed are solid-state rigs, HF, VHF, and UHF or any combination.

The Handiham program is a part of Courage Center, a national, not-for-profit rehabilitation and resource center for people with physical disabilities, brain injuries, speech or vision impairments, or hearing loss. Headquartered in Minneapolis, Courage Center offers comprehensive, life-long services to people of all ages.
