Hamfest 2005

Status Report – July 3, 2005

As most of you have probably heard, we learned only a couple of weeks ago that the National Guard Armory would not be available for this year’s Hamfest.  The National Guard unit currently stationed there is moving out and is being replaced by another unit.  The activities of this transition would get in the way of our use of the Armory for the hamfest.

We have been fortunate in obtaining another venue for our event.  It is the Ashland Optimist Complex, in Ashland, MO.   I am grateful to KCØTXW and KCØUTM for their assistance in finding this location.  I have visited the site and it appears excellent for our purposes.  It provides slightly more floor space than the Armory, has a spacious kitchen and plentiful parking, and the rental (about the same as the Armory) includes the use of 56 tables, more than enough for our event.  This will save us $140 for table rental.  The best feature of this site is that it is air conditioned.

There are a couple of aspects that will require some flexibility on our part.  Because the site is used for bingo on Friday nights, we will not have access to set up until about 2200 (10:00) on the night before the hamfest.  Setup should be somewhat easier than at the Armory because the tables will already be set up and will only need to be rearranged.  There is only one meeting room, so we will have to think creatively about the schedule for forums and testing.

I have emailed the major vendors from last year to advise them of the change of venue, but so far have had no responses.  The only vendor to have confirmed attendance (before the change) was QuikCards.  I do know that WBØW will not be attending and The Ham Station is very doubtful.
WYØB has changed the announcement on the CMRA web site.  Although I emailed the ARRL the same day as we decided on the new venue it was a couple of days too late to alter the QST listing.  I have also emailed CQ and World Radio about the change, but I would not be surprised if it was also too late for them to change their listings.  I think it will be necessary to station someone at the Armory driveway on the morning of the hamfest to redirect people who haven’t heard of the change.
The prizes have been ordered.

We will still need as many volunteers as possible, so please turn up to help both on the Friday night and on Saturday, August 20th.

Minutes: Minutes for June 2005 Meeting

Meeting opened at 7:01 PM. Introductions went all around. The minutes were read and approved.

Savings: $2,227.14

Checking: $2,516.39

Old Business: The location for Field Day has been confirmed at Rock Bridge State Park. For more information on Field Day, check out the Announcements section.

The club auction for this year will be held at the next meeting, on July 12th. It is coming together

quite nicely, and there is a good lineup of items to sell.

The hamfest preparation is progressing together quite nicely as well. The main prizes have been purchased, and a speaker (Chuck Skoalaut) has been selected for one of the forums.

The sidearm will finally be installed on the tower in Centralia. It is scheduled for installation on June 16th at 8 AM. A recap of the installation will be provided at the next meeting.

An update on the APRS trackers. At the Dayton hamfest, Don Moore bought some radios and antennas for experimentation with the trackers. He said that some radios worked, while some didn't.

Vests have been purchased for the club and club members. Bob Jett wanted to put the purchases on his credit card, but he was unable to. So, he voted to use $594.50 of the club funds to buy the vests.

Individuals who bought the vests would then pay their portion back to the club. This way the club

would regain all of the money back into the funds.

New Business: The Columbia Cup bicycle race will take place on July 2nd. Ten operators will be needed, and should be there at 8 AM for preparations. Jim (KØWWV) can be contacted for more information.

Announcements: This year's Field Day takes place on June 25th-26th at Rock Bridge State Park. A picnic will be held on the 25th at 5 PM. People should bring pot-luck food, such as chips & dip, salads, burgers, hot dogs, etc. There will be approximately 4 stations for operations (one for SSB, one for CW, one possibly for PSK or digital, and one for Get On The Air).

On June 18th at 10:30 AM a special net will be called on 3.963 Mhz. It is called the Kansas City

Emergency Manager's net.

A local ham (J.D. Moss, KBØSB) is moving out of the area, and is looking to sell some equipment. Anyone wanting information can contact Bob Jett for Mr. Moss's address, email, and phone numbers.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:35 PM. No program was held after the meeting.

Hope to see everyone at the next meeting.

Until then 73's,

Nathan KCØLCS
