Their history goes back at 1800 when a German manager, Felipe Westhoff arrives to the area in search of appropriate wood for the construction. This way this became the first browser and discoverer, founding Melinka and settling down there with their family.

The Commune of The Guaitecas is located in the northwest of the Region of Aisén, and it constitutes the door of entrance north to this vast territory. Islands Guaitécas At the moment is composed for more than 40 islands located to the south of the Island of Chiloé, being the main ones "Guaitecas and Ascension"; in this last one Pto is located. Melinka, Capital of the commune with a population of 2.000 inhabitants. The territorial surface is of approximately 459 km2, 90% of the population of this commune is located in Port Melinka and Repollal. The whole territory presents a rainy-temperate marine climate (approx. 4 mts. of annual rain), formed by humid forests of great quantity of vegetation and scarce fauna. The most important wealth, undoubtedly, is in the sea; in spite of the indiscriminate exploitation of the marine resources for many years, they can still be: hedgehogs, crazy, choritos, choros shoes, oysters, clams, picorocos, different classes of algae, jaibas and fish. Their gastronomy is based mainly on products of the sea.
