CCARS Dayton 2000

last updated 31st May, 2000.

Quick and snap version (to be amended and modified as more material shows up).

It all started from various Saturday morning chat on H.F back mid 1998. We felt Y2K is a good chance to get together and have an eyeball QSO during the Dayton hamvention. The group is getting larger and larger. Final list came up to about 25 potential participants (from VR2, W6, VE7, VE6 and VE3).

It is just unfortunate that some members could not make it due to sudden issues. The final group turned out to be as follows:

AF4BH, W6EE, W6VM, W6BBA, W6QNT, W6BUR, K6MEW, KE7KD, KG6TN from USA.

VE6OZ,V E3CQD, VE3CKW, VE3FLF, VE3LAU, VE3RGW, VE3ZEM, VA3ADM, VA3JMA, VA3KMT, VA3KWK, VA3MKO and Tony Au from Canada.

VR2GP from Hong Kong

With past experience of the high radio channel usage of the area during the event, we opted to set up three channels for inter-group communication.

446.875MHz -88.5Hz as prime 'group' contact channel

442.275MHz 88.5Hz as alternate 'group' contact channel.

145.19MHz -600KHz offset - general calling and emergency issues monitoring channel inside Ohio area.

;

We are very impressed by the superior performance of the Ohio VHF repeater network. The activities heard on 145.19MHz fully demonstrated the power and efficiency of a well-designed wide area system. The 8 hours drive was quite pleasant although we did encountered some thunderstorm as we passed Windsor area. We also run into other hams on their way and have some warm VHF greeting and eyeball QSO (through windscreen) way before we reached Dayton.

Special thanks to :

David Ho (AF4BH) who arranged the Y2K reflector web page to help line up this meeting and the booking of the two dining location for the two evenings.

Mark Lew (VA3MKO) who arranged the rooms for Toronto group. A silent thanks to the manager of Fairfield Inn (Troy Town) for four free nights at Ramada Inn (Piqua) to the whole VE3 group.

Bill Fong (W6BBA) who arranged the rooms for the USA group.
