ARMS MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

COLIN STILLMAN, WA2KKF

This week the ARMS spotlight shines on Colin Stillman, WA2KKF, from Cuba, New York. Colin received his Novice Class Amateur Radio license in 1959 and was issued the call sign WV2KKF.

For the newer ones in the hobby, that WV2 call sign prefix may look a bit strange. But many of us will remember when, after all the K calls were issued, the FCC began issuing the WA prefix for the Technician Class and higher in the the second and sixth call areas. Novices were issued WV prefixes. When the fourth call area ran out of K prefixes, the FCC changed and issued Novices WN prefixes.

Colin's Novice station brings back even more memories. His transmitter was a Heathkit DX-40 and his receiver was a Hallicrafters SX-99. The WA2KKF station today is all all modern, solid state stuff with Kenwood transceivers on 160-10 meters and Icoms on two meters. His main operating interests including CW, contesting, working DX, and QRP.

His operating awards include the Rag Chewers Club, 7240 Club, Rotten Apples, and the Bible Fellowship plaque.

Colin worked for thirty-three years as an electronic technician at ACME Electric Corporation. He is now retired. He is a member of North Park Wesleyan Church and is actively involved in volunteer service there. He also is a volunteer at the local SPCA. His children live in Texas and California--a long way from home.

One verse of Scripture won't do it for Colin. He lists Psalm 23 as his favorite passage. "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever."
