This weeks Spotlight is on ARMS member Tom Hauskins, AAØLF, from Marion, Iowa. Tom was first licensed in 1978
and currently holds an Amateur Extra Class license. He joined ARMS in March of 1985.
Tom was first introduced to ARMS while stationed at Hill AFB, in Ogden, UT as the operator at the Base MARS
station, to set up and reactivate it. Tom had a visitor enter the station, who asked if he could use one of
the radio positions to check into a net during his break time. The Collins KWM-2A was tuned up using the log
periodic on 14.307.5 Mhz. When the net control asked for further check-ins, the transmitter fired up with,
This is WØETA, short time.
From that day on, Tom had the radio warmed up and ready when Chuck
Brockmeyer came in for his morning break.
Tom served twenty years in the US Air Force as a Special Purpose Vehicle Repairman and the past 15 years as a
Caterpillar Lift Truck Field Service Technician at Altorfer Lift Truck in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Tom's specialty
is electric lift trucks, but also repairs LP gas lift trucks.
Tom has held call sign KA6TH while stationed in Okinawa, Japan, living and operating from the Island of IE
Shima, DA2TD, while stationed at Rhein Main AB, Germany, and GØ/NØDNJ while TDY to Greenham Common, England.
Tom's station now includes a Kenwood TS-130S transceiver, an MFJ-989 antenna tuner and a Zepp dipole. He does
a little packet radio on 2 meters. HE also enjoys participating in the ARMS Midwest Section Net on Saturday
mornings, contacting DX and special event stations.
Tom has been married to Deb for 17 wonderful years. They have five children, two from Tom's previous
marriage: April (36), Kelly (34) and three from Deb's previous marriage, but adopted by Tom: Anna (24),
John (24), and Jacob (20). April and Kelly live in Arizona. Anna, John, and Jacob live in Iowa.
Tom is a member of Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Marion, Iowa. He is a past church council member.
He and Deb taught Sunday school together and were group leaders for Wednesday Night Live and Logos. Tom was
also a Confirmation Group leader.
Isaiah 40:31 is Tom's favorite Bible verse: But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint
.
