About This Form
Amateur Radio donates thousands of
man-hours of supplementary public service communications in civil emergencies,
official drills and events such as parades and marathons each year. Such
events show Amateur Radio in its best light, and it is critically important
that ARRL bring documentation of this public service work to the attention
of the Congress, the FCC and other public officials. Your information below
is an important addition to the record. Please complete and return this
form to the Public Service Branch at ARRL Headquarters. Thank you.

17. Other comments: The slides were purposely triggered with shots by the Alaska Department of Transportation. The avalanches took out the major power lines that serve Juneau, telephone lines into Thane, and blocked the road for two days. Juneau hams organized a system to get message traffic to and from Thane because we expected that the phones may be out for a long time. We put out an announcement through a local radio station and informed the police that we could handle health and welfare to and from Thane residents. We announced that Jim Dillon WL7CMQ, who lives on the Thane side of the blocked road, marked his mail box with yellow tape for use as a message drop. We gave the phone numbers of hams standing by in Juneau to assist with communications and other hams stayed on frequency to assist if necessary.
We used this system to relay messages until the telephone lines were reconnected about three hours after we mobilized for this event. WL7CMQ personally checked in on the welfare of two sets of house bound families at the request of concerned relatives. While the outage wasn't as long as we expected it to be, we demonstrated that we could do the job.
The photos were taken be a Thane resident who was hiking out to catch a plane and start his vacation that day.
