ARRL Appointed Positions

This page describes the titles and duties of each ARRL appointed position within the ARES organization. The positions are shown in order of responsibility.
Section Manager (SM)
Within each ARRL Section, one Section Manager is elected by the ARRL members in that section. The Section Manager is responsible for all ARRL field activity within his or her section. This includes all ARES activity, reported by the Section Emergency Coordinator.
Section Emergency Coordinator (SEC)
Within each ARRL Section, one Section Emergency Coordinator is appointed by the Section Manager. The Section Emergency Coordinator is responsible for all ARES activity within his or her section. The Section Emergency Coordinator reports to the Section Manager.
District Emergency Coordinator (DEC)
Within each ARRL District, one District Emergency Coordinator is appointed by the Section Emergency Coordinator. The District Emergency Coordinator is responsible for all ARES activity within his or her district. The District Emergency Coordinator reports to the Section Emergency Coordinator.
Emergency Coordinator (EC)
Within each ARRL District, several Emergency Coordinators are appointed by the District Emergency Coordinator. Each Emergency Coordinator is responsible for all ARES activity within one specific township or other population center or geographic region. The Emergency Coordinator reports to the District Emergency Coordinator.

This is the normal structure of the ARRL field organization, and the New York City and Suffolk Districts are organized this way. In the Nassau County District, Emergency Coordinators are appointed by function rather than by township or geographic area, and are responsible for performing their specific function, within the entire district. These functions can be administrative, liaison, logistics, or operations.
Assistant Emergency Coordinator (AEC)
Within each ARRL District, several Assistant Emergency Coordinators are selected by an Emergency Coordinator, and appointed by the District Emergency Coordinator. Each Assistant Emergency Coordinator is responsible for performing their appointed function, which can be administrative, liaison, logistics, or operations, within the specific township or geographic region of the Emergency Coordinator they report to.

This is the normal structure of the ARRL field organization, and the New York City and Suffolk Districts are organized this way. In the Nassau County District, the Assistant Emergency Coordinator reports to the District Emergency Coordinator, and performs his or her function within the entire district.
