 ILARES HF Net General Information

SCHEDULE:

This ILARES HF Net is regularly held on the first and third Sunday of each month at 4:30 PM (1630) local time, and will meet anytime for the emergency.

FREQUENCY:
The Illinois ARES® HF Section Net regularly meet on 75M at 3.905 Mhz LSB, plus or minus.
This net may also meet on 40M at 7.230 Mhz LSB, plus or minus, as needed for daytime or summertime
propagation, or as band conditions require.

QSY BAND:
A band change from 75M to 40M may be called by the Net Control Station, in advance of or during any part of the net. On QSY BAND CHANGE heard direct or by relay, this net may leave 3.905MHz and reconvene on 7.230 MHz LSB, plus or minus, with 10 minutes notice.
Low mounted horizontal wire antennas for both 75M
and 40M should be used for both the home station, EOC and field use and are stongly recommended for this net to fast band changes.

REGULAR NET PURPOSE:
This is a formal ARES® net with a regular roll call of the Illinois Section ARES Emergency Coordinators, and their Official Emergency Stations, to encourage HF reporting activity from each Illinois county.
All ARES® and EmComm stations from each Illinois county are strongly encouraged to monitor these regular Illinois ARES® HF Net sessions for section, district and local ARES® information, and to practice and to help develop effective emergency HF radio coverage in this mode throughout the state and Section of Illinois.

EMERGENCY PURPOSE:
This net may be active on these frequencies (plus or minus) in the emergency. Standby monitoring during any wide area or local emergencies is an emergency pupose of this net practice.
for periodic announcements of ARES and EmComm working frequencies, requests for mutual aid from Emergency Coordinators, and other SEC/DEC/EC bulletins.

Practiced and capable HF stations are always needed in each Illinois County for possible relay of tactical and formal Emergency and Priority message traffic in ARES®.
Emergency power shall be kept available by net members, and periodically tested during this net.

NET FORMAT:
   For the CLOSED NET -

A short preamble for the net purpose and use will be given by the Net Control Station.
A call for Emergency and Priority traffic ALWAYS begins each ARES net.
Formal Illinois Section roster or roll call then follows for:
ARRL/IL District Emergency Coordinators (DEC/IL) are first checked in to the net.
Reports on EmComm matters in their district are made by these DEC when recalled.
ARRL/IL Emergency Coordinators (EC) are checked in to the net.
All local EC reports are given in the EC second round when EC are recalled .
In the latter portion of the closed net, another roll in county order and/or by call sign may follow for stations that have previously checked in, as time permits.
NOTE:     A locally designated OES, AEC or ARES® local representatives may also check in for the absent local EC, when arranged with that local EC. Give your call sign when you hear the EC called, or when your District or County jurisdiction is called. Then when called by the NCS in the EC report round, please deliver any EC provided local report on local ARES® activities then. Please follow the best practices of EC.
   For the OPEN NET
New net attendees may check in when the Net Control Station concludes the closed net, and should give their call sign only after hearing their Illinois county called by the NCS.

ARRL Official Emergency Stations (OES/IL),  Assistant EC (AEC) and  ARES-IL Registered Responders  who are not on the current roster are most welcome at this time.
Any station may request information on ARES at the invitation of the NCS.

Adjacent state or other section net liasion stations may also check in with traffic at any time after the net begins.

NET ROSTER:

NET TIPS:
    Net
Stations are invited to test procedures and equipment that may be used for the emergency during this twice monthly information and roll call net.
This ARES Net encourages Near Vertical Incident Skywave (NVIS) propagation techniques to reduce QRM, and skip zone lost coverage.

    Simple and portable NVIS
HF dual band (75/40M) antennas are strongly encouraged for best results in monitoring and attending this net. NVIS antennas are simple horizontal wire dipole antennas mounted above but near ground, and tuned to the frequencies used.
A standard ARES® field expedient dual band antennas for 75M and 40M will work NVIS stations if the center pole is less than 40 feet and the two dipole band antennas are near 90 degree spacing.

Net stations using vertical and mobile antennas may not be well received by our net stations that are using NVIS horizontal
dipole antennas, and may require distant relay.
Although 80/40M high mounted DX or vertical antennas with the inherent QRM and skip zone losses are not discouraged,
they have similar problems in interference and skip.
our net goal is to improve both transmission and reception by all net members throughout the state, and to minimize interference, by properly using NVIS
propagation techniques.
