Mt. Erebus
Mt. Erebus fuming
The local hills around McMurdo block the view of Mt. Erebus, but as soon as you move away, Erebus looms above all the surroundings. On many days the peak is covered in clouds formed by wind convection. The peak contains a volcanic crater in which lava is regularly erupting. Hot lava evaporates ice in the crater, making large steam clouds that rise upward in a plume that is visible on clear days.
