Public Service Events for 2006
These are the events as presently known. There will be others.
Information/volunteers: please contact Ed Ricco, N5LI unless otherwise indicated in the description of the particular event. E-mail: n5li@arrl.net or call 505-247-4866(h) or 505-768-7314(w).
Ed will take signups for April and May events listed, if anyone is interested. If you have already contacted Ed about any of these events, you are on the list and need not sign up again.
Sunday, May 7, Run for the Zoo -- A fund raiser for our zoo. There will be a 10K run, a 5K run (both competitive timed events), a 5K walk, and a 1 mile fun run. The course starts and ends near the zoo and runs along Tingley Drive and city streets in the Albuquerque Country Club area. Thousands of runners/walkers usually take part. We will be positioning hams at the start and finish and at mileposts along the course. See www.nmzoosociety.org/run4zoo/index.asp . This is a fairly low-key, enjoyable, and popular event.
Sunday, May 21, Santa Fe Century -- A 100-mile bike tour that draws many hundreds of cyclists. The main ride starts and ends in Santa Fe, following a course that runs south on NM 14 through Madrid and Golden, east and south on NM 344 through Cedar Grove, east on NM 472 to Stanley, north on NM 41 and US 285 through Galisteo and Eldorado, and west on I-25 to Santa Fe. There are shorter rides encompassed in the longer course. We will be providing communications support from vehicles accompanying the riders and parked at rest stops. See www.santafecentury.com .
Saturday, June 3, American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure -- A bicycle tour to benefit the American Diabetes Association. We first worked with this group in 2005 and they were so pleased with the amateur radio support they received that they have asked the amateur community to help again. They have announced a 100-mile ride, a ³metric century² (100 km or approximately 60 miles), a 25-mile ride, and a 10-mile ride. We will have to see how much of this we can cover. The longest ride starts in Bernalillo and travels on routes 550 and 4 to the Gilman Tunnels and return. The metric century follows a loop from Bernalillo that runs as far north as Algodones and, on the south end, runs through Corrales. The 25-mile ride apparently loops from Bernalillo through Corrales. The 10-mile ride follows a five mile out-and-back route. See http://main.diabetes.org/site/TR?pg=entry&fr_id=3301 As usual, we would like to have operators in vehicles watching over the riders and positioned at rest stops and other strategic locations along the route.
Saturday-Sunday, August 5-6, MS 150 Bike Tour -- This is the annual 150-mile bike ride to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, sponsored by the Rio Grande Chapter of the society. The registration target is 100-plus riders, and they are off to a good start. The route will be the same as in 2005: Bernalillo to Los Alamos on the first day via NM 550 and 4 mainly, overnight in Los Alamos, and retrace the route back to Bernalillo on the second day. We will be looking for hams to work one or both days from vehicles accompanying the riders and parked at rest stops. See http://www.nationalmssociety.org/MSBike-NewMexico.asp and note the reference to the "great communications network." That's us!
Sunday, August 6, La Luz Trail Run -- A race up La Luz Trail for very hardy runners. See http://www.aroadrun.org/La_Luz/La_Luz.htm . Hams have regularly supported this event. We need stations with 2-meter handheld or mobile capability at the start and finish, as well as handheld units at a few locations along the route which must be accessed by hiking from the bottom or top of the trail. (Ed will take volunteer signups for this event but someone else will have to coordinate the communications operation. Anyone care to volunteer?)
Sunday, October 22, Duke City Marathon -- Information to be provided. See www.dukecitymarathon.com which at some point will have up-to-date information.
These are the events presently announced.
