From the President

Mike Pendley,
K5ATM

ARDF is past, most of my summer time obligations are past, and just as things were calming down and my life was getting back to normal -- I became a "Grandpa" for the first time on September 22. The baby was a few weeks early but everything seems to be fine and John should be going home with mom and dad in a couple of weeks. The baby does not have a call sign yet… but that leads into the next subject.

The Board of Directors met on the 26th of September. One of the topics discussed was conducting a HAM radio licensing school like the ones Richie (KC5NZR) periodically held. Carl Russell has graciously agreed to handle class logistics. Assuming we find enough volunteers to teach, Technician, General, and Extra classes will all be offered. With the winter holidays just around the corner we recognized that it would be difficult to get anything going before the first of the year. We hope to include class information with the letter that will be sent to all members announcing the annual winter banquet that should go out mid November.

The date for the banquet is December 11th. The location will be the same as last year. Specific information and an RSVP request will be sent out by "snail mail" in November. The final two topics discussed at the Director's meeting were the election committee and the electronics class that was canceled when Richie left town.

It appears that we have at least one volunteer for all the officer positions but one. We may also need one new director this year. I hesitate to say any more until we have a formal nominating committee in place. If you are interested in serving on the nominating committee or if you are interested in serving as an officer or director please see me or any of the current officers / directors.

The directors also recognized that it would be difficult to get the electronics class back on track before the end of the year. We did all agree that the class was important and we are committed to making it happen. The key resource we are lacking is a volunteer for "head instructor". I have no doubt that we will be able to find folks to help with the class but we need someone to develop the overall class plan. One way or the other I am committed to making this happen early in 2006.

The directors were pleased to learn that Brian (N5ZGT) has volunteered to organize the annual highway cleanup this year. I believe the cleanup is scheduled for after the November AARC meeting but Brian will fill us in on the details.

One final note. Freeman mentioned at the director's meeting that at a past AARC meeting the management of JB's asked if AARC members could park their cars in the main parking lot slots as opposed to the slots that run directly along the north and west side of the building. Filling these slots makes JB's look much busier than it actually is and management is afraid it is hurting business. I understand the argument that we are customers too and I have no plans to institute a parking police division in AARC -- but I ask you to at least consider the request. We finished the director's meeting listening to Carl tell hurricane relief stories and how important HAM radio was… but I will say no more. Carl is giving our technical presentation this morning so you can hear it from the man himself.
