Two topics this month:

The planned Introduction to Electronics class and a call for help.First the electronics class. We were well on our way to offering two classes in May - one on basic soldering skills and another on kit building and basic radio theory. I am sorry to say we hit a major last minute snag and had to cancel the classes with very short notice. I won't go into the reason but it is my intention to get these classes rescheduled as soon as possible. I will provide specific information in this column next month.

Now the call for help. On May 25 Freeman and I received the e-mail reprinted below. As I started to read the message my first thought was "scam". It sounded too much like the "Nigerian" spam I receive 3-4 times a week. However, as I read on I realized the e-mail was probably quite sincere. I contacted KC0RRS and verified he did indeed send the e-mail. The request is both sincere and worthwhile - but will require a major commitment of time and effort. I thought the best first step was to make the general membership aware of the request and to ask for opinions on how the club should respond.

Dear Mike Pendley and Freeman Pascal,

My name is Bruce Liddel. I have a younger brother, Alan Liddel, living in Albuquerque, who has now expressed a sincere interest in becoming an amateur radio operator. This would seem simple were it not for several ominous roadblocks which I shall explain soon. This is the reason why I am writing to you. On October 18, 2003, my brother was brutally attacked, and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He was in a coma for nearly seven whole days. He was uninsured. His injury has primarily affected his speech and vocabulary. Despite a college degree from St Johns in Santa Fe, and numerous programming courses at UNM and TVI prior to the attack, he is currently still unable to work effectively at anything, except oddly enough for his volunteer position at KUNM, as the producer of "Fresh", aired on Thursday nights. Financially, Alan subsists on Medicaid, social security disability, and the new "politically correct" form of food stamps. Purchasing the technician study guide and modest 2 meter radio with antenna are clearly beyond his resources at this time. I am reluctant to assist him financially for fear it could affect his eligibility for various assistance programs. My assistance is further severely limited because I live in Lawrence Kansas, some 500+ miles away.

Sincerely,

Bruce Liddel
