Mike Pendley,
K5ATM
The board of directors met at the Upper Rio FM Society main hub on Gibson and San Mateo on April 4th. The hub was chosen for two reasons. First, to let the Board get a feel for the machinery that keeps the network of linked repeaters running. Second, to see where the upcoming basic electronics and kit building classes will be held. The next Directors meeting will be June 6 - location TBD.
And speaking of the electronics class ... To refresh your memory, the AARC is planning a basic electronics and kit building class that is to be taught by Richie Allen (KC5NZR). I will not steal too much of Richie's thunder here but if all goes well look for the class to be held in May or June. The kits have been ordered (and I think are already in hand) and Richie is busy putting class materials together.
I reported here last month that Doug Asher (KK5DUG), past AARC president and current Boy Scout leader organized a HAM Radio School for Boy Scouts over the April 17 weekend. Doug has not published a final accounting but the unofficial results are 17 attendees with 10 of the 16 that took the test passing. Most of those that did not pass only missed by a question or two. Doug has follow-up tutoring and testing plans already in the works. Doug says his goal is an eventual 100% pass.
Science Fair results: Steve McWilliams (KK5KS), Doug Asher (KK5DUG), and Dennis Rieger (KK5DB) represented the AARC at the regional science fair held at UNM in March. Unfortunately, they were unable to find a project that dealt with the purpose of the AARC annual award. Steve says that some years they come up dry and in other years (like last year) good projects are found.
Duke City Ham Fest: The Duke City Ham Fest Board of Directors (and volunteers) meet the Second Monday of the month at Twisters on Juan Tabo (just south of Candelaria) at 6PM for dinner and 7PM for business. As you might expect, the DCHF organizers are looking for more to help. The organizing committee will most likely try to develop a list of tasks that need to be covered at the next meeting. If you are interested in helping with this important event please consider attending the next meeting or get word to one of the organizers (I am one).
AARC Treasurer needed. While I am sure she wished otherwise, Mel Gellenthien (KB0IEA) needed to submit her resignation as AARC Treasurer for personal reasons last month. I believe Mel will continue being active with the AARC but simply cannot take on the responsibilities as Treasurer at the moment. Please join me in thanking Mel for her efforts. Her resignation will leave a BIG hole. The position of Treasurer is a VERY important position that needs to be filled as quickly as possible. Please, if you have any interest in serving the AARC in this capacity please see me or any of the Board members after the meeting.
