From the President

Mike Pendley,
K5ATM

The AARC Board of Directors met on February 7 - and what a meeting it was. I can say, without a doubt, that this year's board is full of energetic people that want to do good things.

Early in the meeting I posed the question "What is the AARC - and what should it be?" My question was intended to ask what makes the AARC different from any other HAM club. After some discussion another board member asked an equally good question - "Why did you join AARC?"

We took turns answering that second question. The majority of the responses were "To meet other people with a similar interest" and "To learn more about HAM radio".

A significant part of the meeting focused on the second statement - To learn more about HAM radio. The result was a decision to try and put together one or more classes to teach interested HAMS basic electronic skills. The first class is likely to be one in which all participants build a simple HAM radio related kit. The class would not only teach how the device works but how to build kits (e.g. part identification, coil winding, soldering skills, etc.) This is still a concept but BoD members are actively looking for the perfect kit and a venue to hold the class. At least one potential kit was ordered by a board member to evaluate. Please provide feedback if you are interested in taking the class, helping to put on the class, or if you just have ideas that you think might make the effort more successful.

Other meeting topics included:
  • Making it easy to find the club web site. This task has already been completed. To visit the AARC web site just go to www.abqham.org .
  • Placing the AARC logo on file with a local "T-shirt" shop. This will allow interested AARC members to obtain items like caps and shirts branded with the AARC logo. More information (and samples) will be presented at the meeting today.
  • Ascertaining the state of the AARC library and how to make it more available to club members
  • Explorer Post - This topic was tabled until Brian (N5ZGT) gets back in town.
  • Science Fair - The same NW Regional Science Fair prize as the last several years (a $100 savings bond) was approved.
  • The annual year-end party was scheduled for December 11
  • A preliminary 2005 budget was passed. This budget is essentially the same as the one used for the last 5 years.
The status of the 2004 close out audit was discussed (the audit is in progress).

The next Board of Directors meeting will be held on March 7 at N5VA so board members can better understand what N5VA has to offer and how the general membership
