AMSAT marks microsats' anniversary

(Jan 25, 2005) -- Saturday, January 22, marked the 15th anniversary of the launch of five OSCAR microsats, AMSAT says. The microsats are UoSAT-4 (UO-15), PACSAT (AO-16), DOVE (DO-17), WEBERSAT (WO-18) and LUSAT (LO-19). Based on the success of UoSAT-OSCAR-11's digital communications experiment, AO-16 was designed as a dedicated store-and-forward file server in space, with 10 MB of static RAM available for message storage and a RAM disk and an S band beacon. DO-17 was sponsored by AMSAT-Brazil under the leadership of Junior Torres DeCastro, PY2BJO. Its primary mission was to provide an easily receivable signal for educational institutions, with telemetry was in the familiar 1200 baud AFSK AX.25 packet format. WO-18 carried a Mode JD digital transponder, two 70 cm beacons and a 1200-baud AX.25 packet system. LO-19, coordinated by AMSAT Argentina, was a packet radio store-and-forward spacecraft much the same as AO-16 but with an additional 70 cm CW beacon. Of the five microsats, AO-16 and LO-19 are still considered semi-operational, while UO-15, DO-17 and WO-18 are no longer functional. The AMSAT Web site has more information about these groundbreaking satellites.--AMSAT News Service via Perry Klein, W3PK
