MINUTES OF THE GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
OF THE
ALBUQUERQUE AMATEUR RADIO CLUB

8 January 2005


  1. Preliminary Items
    1. The meeting was called to order by president Pendley, K5ATM, at 0800.
    2. Visitors were introduced.
    3. Don Grab, K5BIS, led the invocation.
    4. President Pendley led the Pledge of Allegiance.
    5. Self-introductions were made by all present.
    6. Health and welfare reports.
      1. Lu Jessen has had knee-replacement surgery. There were some complications, but she is doing fine now. She welcomes phone calls at 291-2312.

  2. ARRL report: SM Bill Weatherford, KM5FT
    1. Ham-Radio Communications in the aftermath of the Indian Ocean tsunami:
      1. The Washing Post published a story on a Dxpedition to the Andaman Islands. After the tsunami, their equipment was the only means of communication at that site. Further information is given on the ARRL website.
      2. Further west, amateur radio operators were invited to operate from the Prime Ministers house in Sri Lanka.
    2. A victory on the side of justice and truth: the FCC cited a homeowner in Springwood, TX, for interfering with the operation of amateur radio. The source of the EMI was faulty battery chargers.
    3. Registration for the Level II emergency communication class opens Monday, 10 January.
    4. Jerome Jarze, N8ATV, is going to Indonesia to supply communications. He is looking for and borrowing solid-state ham equipment for this activity.

  3. Legislation - no report.

  4. Special Interest Groups
    1. Transmitter hunters.
      1. Jerry Boyd, WB8WFK, is compiling a list of volunteer activities required for the US DF Championships to be held here in 2005. To volunteer for these positions, please see WWW.ARDF.US
      2. The next hunt is 15 January. See Mike Pendley, K5ATM, for details.
    2. Ruby Allen, KC5NZS, reminds us that names of the ARRL scholarship nominees are due February 1. Please submit applications for deserving aspirants by that time.

  5. Old Business
    1. The Treasurer's report is available.

  6. New Business
    1. Mark your calendars for the 10th annual Albuquerque Winter Tail Gate Swapfest: it takes place on Saturday, January 29, 2005. This event is being hosted by the 146.58 Simplex Group in Albuquerque, and will once again be held in the North student parking lot of Del Norte High School, located at San Mateo and Montgomery Blvds in Albuquerque. Count on all the action to take place between sunrise and 1:00PM, including new and used ham gear sales, equipment dealers, and more.

  7. No minutes of the December meeting were available for approval.

  8. There will be a talk on a novel, Field-Day technique used to yield a new record last year.

  9. The treasurer's report was accepted.

  10. Program
    1. Jerry Boyd, WB8WFK, presented an ARDF TX Project. The phase-I concept employed master and slave DDS (direct digital synthesis) chips and a PIC microprocessor. The next step is the addition of a power amplifier.
    2. Mike Pendley, K5ATM, presented a clip from coverage of one of their nighttime foxhunts. The stars of the show were our own presidents, Mike and Jerry.
