Maui County 800 MHz radio system undergoing rebanding (updated 6/10/08)
I erroneously reported that the entire Maui County 800 MHz system was rebanded in yesterday's news update.

The radio system is undergoing rebanding, and not all sites have been converted to the new frequency band.  Based on personal monitoring of the radio system earlier today (6/10/08), it appears that the Waiakeakua (Lanai) radio site has been rebanded and operational, as is the Wailuku site.

My contact reports that radios are being switched out with different equipment (I'm not sure exactly what type, but I'll report once I know).  As this appears to be a slow switchover, the "old" 866-868 MHz system is being simulcast with the "new" 851-853 MHz system so the radios can communicate with each other regardless of what frequency band they're operating on.  Radios are currently being reprogrammed with the new frequencies, and I anticipate that once all areas receive their updated equipment, they'll flip the switch so all operations are on the 851-853 MHz side.

For now, you will hear transmissions on both 851-853 and 866-868 MHz (some may be exactly the same).  This is normal as the transition continues.
