Ilocos Sur (Vigan)

The capital of Ilocos Sur, Vigan is one of the best preserved examples of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia. Founded in 1572 by Juan de Salcedo, Vigan was thankfully spared bombing in WWII and thus retains much of its old character. Walking its cobblestone streets or through its spacious plazas is like taking a stroll back in time. The city was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999.

The bus ride up the west coast of Luzon provides some stunning scenes of rice paddies and the massive Cordillera Mountains shrouded in mist.

The colossal St Paul Cathedral is the city's showpiece.
First built in 1574 in imposing earthquake baroque style, the cathedral is as amazing inside as it is out.

Just outside the cathedral is an impressive clock tower. Rows of horse-drawn carriages are available for hire.

Vigan's old buildings sport a variety of colors and some very intriguing windows and doorways.
