Palawan

Palawan

Palawan is often called the Philippines' last frontier, and indeed it is far enough removed from the crowds in Manila to feel like another world. One is impressed immediately by the greenery of the place; the visitor notices right away that even the capital city of Puerto Princesa is nearly litter free thanks to strict city ordinances that prohibit the dumping rubbish on the streets. I've been to the place twice, yet I've barely scratched the surface. My first visit to this remote province was spent entirely at the exclusive Dos Palmas Resort on Arreceffi Island in Honda Bay. A few years later I returned to the north to the islands in Bacuit Bay, home to some of the Philippines most secluded luxury resorts. I hope to add more locales on future visits to this amazing place.

Flying over the center of the island. The mountain range pictured below sits on top of one of Palawan's major tourist attractions, an underground river that is navigable for several miles.

The entire length of the island is covered with dense vegetation, like these coconut & palm trees.

Honda Bay, near Puerto Princesa, showcases 16 islands that allow ample opportunity for island hopping and snorkeling.

A one hour boat ride from Puerto to Arreceffi ends with live musicians serenading our arrival and welcome drinks pressed into our hands.

We splurged by staying at Dos Palmas Arreceffi Island Resort and took the overwater bungalow that extended the farthest out into the ocean towards the direction of the sunset (shown to the left in this photograph). Our decision to specifically pick that cottage was later rewarded by some incredible views, as will be seen below.

The fabulous spa at Dos Palmas. Hot oil massages at the spa (or, if you prefer, introductory scuba lessons) are included in the price of a stay here, as are three sumptuous daily buffets.

View from our overwater bungalow veranda, a slice of heaven on earth. Cool ocean breezes, beverage in hand, enjoying piped-in flute and piano music that could coax relaxation from even the most reluctant soul.

The day ends with one of the prettiest sunsets on earth.

Also included in the price of a stay at Dos Palmas is a day trip to tiny Puting Buhangin (White Sand) island for a private lunch and a few hours exploring the sandbars that jut out from the island in multiple directions.

Miniloc Island Resort also delights the eyes both above and below the waterline.
