Kauai

Kauai is the oldest of the major Hawaiian islands. Nature has had eons of erosion to carve steep cliffs and wide valleys. It is a quiet, green place that keeps some visitors returning year after year. The house pictured below seems to blend in with the coconut trees.

Lihue, Kauai's principal city, lies at the foot of a scenic mountain range.

The island is best scene from the air, a vantage point that truly shows the striking landscape.

Mt Waialeale is the wettest spot on earth,
with an average of 460 inches (38 feet!) of rain each year.

----------------------------------------

The center of the island features Waimea Canyon, called the "grand canyon of the Pacific" for its striking similarity to the Grand Canyon on the US Mainland.

The end of the road is the Kalalau lookout and a glimpse of the alluring cliffs that line the island's northwest coast.

Kauai's spectacular Na Pali coast is the island's signature attraction.

Horseriding is a popular activity along the north shore not far from Hanalei.

Hurricane Iniki devasted Kauai in 1992; the Hanalei Post Office shows its battle scars.
