Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (by day)

By Helicopter

One of the best ways to sightsee in the park is by helicopter, the only safe way to come close to the active cones.

Helicopters also allow for bird's eye views of collapsed lava tubes like this one, over which we hovered for a few minutes and watched the river of lava flow beneath us.

By Car

Most of the park is accessible by car, but several of the roads lead to dead ends because of lava activity. The lava here had cooled enough to turn mostly black, but still crawled along the road slowly, shooting out flames at odd intervals.

Here is one car that didn't get away from the lava fast enough!

Though the lava flows underground over most of its path to the sea, the point where ocean and lava meet is easily found by following the large plumes of steam visible from miles away.

meanders through an area that bore the full brunt of a volcanic eruption in 1959.

The seemingly endless fields of lava provide an ebony canvass for a vast network of hiking trails.
