Hawaii Counties

The state of Hawaii consists of five counties spread across the entire island chain.
From east to west, they are...

Hawaii County

The County of Hawaii is the Big Island, so named because it is the largest in the chain, twice the size of all of the others combined. It contains Hilo, Hawaii's second largest city, but is perhaps most famous for Volcanoes National Park where the photo below was taken.

Maui County

Maui County includes the islands of Maui, Lanai, Molokai (except Kalaupapa peninsula) and Kahoolawe.

---------------------------------------

Kalawao County

For county hunters, Kalawao County is the most elusive in the entire USA. The county consists only of tiny Kalaupapa peninsula, site of a former leprosy settlement. Current residents number less than a hundred, and special permission must be obtained for outsiders to visit.

---------------------------------------

Honolulu County

Honolulu County embraces not only the city of Honolulu, but the entire island of Oahu as well, home to 90% of the entire population in the state of Hawaii.

Kauai County

The Garden Island of Kauai and isolated Niihau combine to form Kauai County, a relatively rare find on the air.
