I came across this unusual structure when traveling along U.S. 287 on vacation. I contaced the TXDOT office in Wichita Falls and found out this was a support for a suspenstion bridge for a highway predating U.S. 287. I'm not sure if it carried the U.S. 370 designation at one time or not, since 287 was formerly numberd 370. Unfortunately I've misplaced my earlier e-mail that had the highway number. If any readers know, please fill me in. This view is to the west with the river down behind the old structure.

A different angle showing just how much vegetation there is in the area.

This view shows the U.S. 287 bridge and just how old that structure must be compared to the newer bridge.

This is the best I could do to get a photo of the structure. If it was a bridge support - why wasn't it taken down? Actually, I am glad it wasn't taken down!

Only a road geek like me would spot something like this! I think it's a neat looking old structure.

The sign lets us know that we are about the cross the Pease River going west on U.S. Highway 287.

A good view of both U.S. 287 bridges over the Pease River.

Just west of the river, near an overpass, is this old and basically abandoned section of U.S. 287. If you like "old highway" sections, you will enjoy U.S. 287 - it has many, many sections of old and/or abandoned highways.
