No copies of the original WN4JYB QSL card remain in the station archives. The card was silver text on a black background and was printed (like the first cards of so many other Novices) by The Little Print Shop in Austin, Texas. Only 100 cards were ordered and most, if not all, were mailed out confirming QSOs.
This is the first QSL carrying the WB4JYB call sign. While it was a standard design, I had copied the layout from the card that was being used by Bob, K4OCE - one of my two "Elmers".
When all of the original WB4JYB cards ran out, this card design was adopted. This QSL was used from approximately 1972 through 1976.
No QSL was printed during the time that the station was located in Shelby, NC or Spartanburg, SC. The printing of this card apparently ended my preoccupation with "black and gold" QSLs. Lots of these cards were distributed during the 6 years that the station was located in Inman, SC; 1978-1984.
The days of two color, glossy QSLs seemed to have ended by the time the station was moved to Balfour, NC. This very basic card met the primary objective of providing confirmations of contest QSOs and forwarding to QSL managers; functional, but not very artistic!
Continuing with the simplistic approach to QSL design, this card was used while the station was located in LaGrange, GA. At least a little color (blue) was returned to the equation. During the first year in LaGrange, AE4Y celebrated 25 years on-the-air and joined the QCWA (Quarter Century Wireless Association), hence the logo.
Since acquiring a color jet printer, my QSLs seem to change as often as I change bands. Here's one of my recent cards; one dedicated to confirming my QRP QSOs.
