Dots and Dashes _ . . . _

When I was first licensed as a Novice in 1968, I was limited to CW operation using no more than 75 watts and a crystal controlled transmitter.

The novice sub-bands in those days were constantly filled CW signals, often plodding along at 5 or 6 words per minute. Many young hams were desparate wanting in their desire to upgrade their licenses so that they could begin operating on phone using SSB.

In my case, my first station was located in the family TV room. Even after I upgraded, if I wanted to operate while someone was watching TV, I had to do it in a manner that did not disturb them. The TV held undisputed priority over my ham radio station.

Operating CW while wearing a set of headphones was my ticket to being able to get on the air. Whether or not that early experience established my preferences, to this day I prefer to operate CW over SSB.
