The pursuit of long distance contacts has been a central focus of ham radio since the beginning.  What constitutes a DX contact depends on frequency and conditions, but amateur radio allows for worldwide communication on the high frequency shortwave bands.  DX contacts are subject to weak signals, high noise, and interference that demand a high level of proficiency from the amateur radio operator. 

Many of the members of ADXA have received awards for amateur radio operation including DXCC, WAS, WAC, and others. 

New Mexico is often a "rare" contact for DX stations and for some US stations.  New Mexico has an amateur radio population of around 6,500 operators.
