New Mexico is a fairly large Western US state with a fairly small population.  The state has a population of about two million persons.  About a third of that population is concentrated within thirty miles of Albuquerque.

The Rocky Mountains run through New Mexico.  The Rio Grande River  that separates Texas from Mexico starts in Colorado and runs the full length of New Mexico.  Towns in New Mexico are located at altitudes of up to around 9,000 feet.

Albuquerque   5300 feet

Santa Fe   7000 feet

Las Cruces  2500 feet

There are about 5,600 amateur radio operators in the state.   About 2000 of those are located within 20 miles of Albuquerque.

Amateur Radio operators in NM are very active in Search and Rescue, National Weather Service, ARES, RACES, and other public service organizations.
