video.txt MANY video problems fixable by trying a different color setting. Try both 16-bit highcolor and 256 color modes, even if the program specifies one particular one. ==================== Problem:Bear Paw cursor leaves a trail of paw prints Possible Solution:go to Control panel--Mouse-- Motion Tab and uncheck "Show Pointer Trails" check box and click apply. It worked for this customer ===================== QA Dept is looking into the problem with FP Big Action Construction and FP Big Action Garage. These 2 programs where getting black screens when the program launched. After making return calls to the customers, according to QA, updating the video drivers for Cirrus Logic and Trident video cards solved the problem. ======================== Problem:Computer with cyrix chip has a black screen with freezing on a Teletubbies that was installed after the teletubbies(cyrix) patch was installed Solution: 16 bit colors then install Directx6 ====================== On any of the newer products and others. Black patches on screen are caused by Shockwave Remote. End Task on "Remote" (or on all bg tasks if you don't see it). ========================= "Video not available, could not find vids:cvid decompressor." Check multimedia for video compression codecs; if it's already there, Uncheck multimedia; restart Windows. Recheck it and reinstall everything for multimedia from MS Win98 CD. Restart Windows again. ========================== Make sure you are running the program in 256 color mode. To do this: Click on your Start button and choose Settings. From Settings, choose Control Panel and double click on the Display icon. From the Display Properties, click on the Settings Tab. Click on the Arrow next to Color Palette and switch to 256 colors. Click on OK, the computer should prompt you to Restart Your Computer and once you're restarted, try running the program and see if that fixes it. The black screen with the white line on it may be Quicktime related. The error you reported (LBG332 caused divide error in mcicinem.drv at 0002:00006fd2) also seems to be related to it, almost certainly it has something to do with the multimedia drivers. Click on Start, Run, and in the box put in just "QTW.INI" and click OK. This will open the qtw.ini file in Notepad. Look at the first couple of lines in the file. They may look something like this: [Video] Optimize=Driver The second line may say "Optimize=Hardware" instead. In either case, you need to change this line so it says: Optimize=BMP Then click on File, Save, and then click on File, Exit to get out of the editor. Then try the program again. ============================== First case: "Exception 0e at 0028:c0031398 in vxd ---. Called from 0028:c002f97d in vxd ---." This was with Teletubbies; got this error once, rest of the time it simply locked up on a black screen when user clicked on Play. This was on a new CompUSA Win98 system with Sis620 video and ESS Solo soundcard. Has at least DirectX6 or later (I tried to install it from the CD and it immediately said it's installed). Video was 800x600x16-bit. Tried changing it to 640x480; was able to do so; still got the same lockup. When I had her reboot system the screen became distorted. Had to reboot in safe mode and get it back to 800x600 (a real hassle, but we eventually succeeded). Another case: Exception 0e at 0028:c00392cc in vxd ---. This was an Acer Win98 system with a Trident video card. The program was MB9-12. She was in 640x480x256. Tried to change it to 16-bit (required for the program); it said the display type was wrong for this video setting and would not let us change it to the 16-bit mode. In the future if I see this "vxd ---" thing, I'm just going to call it a DirectX related video problem and will not mess with anything. =========================== She installed this program (Teletubbies2); afterward it had her restart her system. Now she cannot read any of the screen fonts. Can't even see the mouse pointer. Computer is 4 years old. Gateway, Win95, P5, 16 MB RAM (meets minimum requirements). Tried Ctrl-Alt-Del; an unreadable message box appeared. Forced a reboot and got it into safe mode; can see the fonts now. Ensoniq Soundscape Vivo PnP. Tseng ET6000 PCI video. Went to Add/Remove Programs; DirectX; Restore Display Drivers. Restarted normally. Now the screen is OK. Advised her NOT to try this program until she updates the video and sound drivers from Gateway, then get latest DirectX from Microsoft. ======================== Problem in FPDOLLHOUSE: Characters are in gray with a Black squares around them. Game requires 256 color and they are set at 256 colors. Stopped all tasks and it works? Then we identified ICM = (Internet Call Manager) as the culprit. It will be listed in the "CLOSE PROGRAM" box as ICM. Close it and the game will work. ICM is a Telephone line monitor and is used with call waiting to send callers a message when the phone line in on the internet - Like "Call back later - I'm online". Video was on 640x480x 32-bit; changed it to 16-bit. Works. ============================= Invalid page fault at xxxx:bff9dba7 Seems to be pretty consistent. Typical addresses are 0137:bff9dba7, but the first part will vary, such as 015f: and others. If it’s an ATI video card, including the Rage series, lower the graphics acceleration from Full to Basic and restart Windows. It’s been working after that, each time I’ve run across this. Updated video drivers might allow them to run it on full acceleration. I have seen this in many of different programs, Davidson, KA, whatever. Note those last 8 digits in the error, and if it’s an ATI based card, try it. =============================== If you get video distortion or other video problems in these programs because the system hates going to 640x480 mode, here’s how to disable the full screen mode. JumpStart Spelling: how to disable full screen mode Use Windows Explorer (or go to MS-DOS shell), and go to the C:\KA\JSSPELL directory, or wherever it was custom installed. Copy SPELLING.exe to JSSPELL.exe. No changes to the icons are necessary and it will also autostart without problems. JumpStart Numbers: how to disable full screen mode Use Windows Explorer (or go to MS-DOS shell), and go to the C:\KA\JSNUMBER directory, or wherever it was custom installed. Copy JSNUMS.exe to JSNUMBER.exe. No changes to the icons are necessary and it will also autostart without problems. JumpStart Music: how to disable full screen mode Use Windows Explorer (or go to MS-DOS shell), and go to the C:\KA\JSMUSIC directory, or wherever it was custom installed. Copy MUSIC.exe to JSMUSIC.exe. No changes to the icons are necessary and it will also autostart without problems. It may also be necessary on some video cards (Sis5597, etc) to set the colors to 256 colors instead of 16-bit. ============================== JumpStart Typing - offset horizontally It only shows up in far right side of screen. Video set for 800x600x16-bit. DirectX not in Add/Remove Programs; no dxsetup or dxmedia found; dxdiag doesn't provide option to restore display drivers. Computer 2 months old. Tried changing the video to 256 colors; applied w/o restarting. Tried program; works. Similar problem, same fix. Screen mixed up, top moved to bottom and vice versa. Changed video from 16-bit to 256 and restarted. Fixed it. ============================== Had a customer who had a HP, fairly new. JS First Grade was working for a bit, but as of late the part where you see the kid skateboarding and Frankie stick his head out of the school house had no sound and the customer was only getting half the picture, the other half was black. Changed him to 256 and lowered Graphic Acceleration (Rage card), but that didn't work. Not until I closed background aps did he get an error: Osd caused a GPF in Osd.exe. Searched for that on his system and it was located in C:\ProgramFiles\MediaScape\OnScreenDisplay. Shut off his screensaver and the program works fine. Whatever this Osd is it must be associated with screen savers and the like. I told him to try and call HP to see if that program was OK and learn how to use it. If it is OK, then just turn off the screen saver. ============================ Macintosh - some text invisible or very very dark. Disable 7200 Graphics Acceleration in extensions. ============================= Black screen in JS Preschool99 tried 256 colors but this does not work ....she has a pionex monitor with refresh rate was at 78 hz the next lower rate was 60 hz but this is bad for the eyes. there was another choice called "default adapter rate" which she tried and now the program colors look good ========================= S3 does not make a video card. There are only one set of drivers by them and they are never updated. They are called reference drivers. S3 only makes a chipset that goes on the card. Don't ask me why but for some reason Microsoft decided that they would have their PnP system detect this. Anytime you see an S3 card in a system that wasn't built by a major computer manufacturer there aren't and never will be updated drivers for them and most likely their using the wrong drivers anyhow. The computer manufacturers update those S3 drivers on their own web sites without changing the name listed in device manager. But not the small companies and not the home "tech". For instance if you see an S3 driver listed for the display adapter, it very well could be a Diamond card. I'll let you figure out which driver is more appropriate for the card. There is no way to tell what the card really is unless you have them pop open the box (which we all know is a bad idea) or they have the paperwork for their computer. Best to tell them about the situation and send them to someone else. Let me clarify that there is only one driver, but that's for each chipset at the S3 web site. Additionally there is one exception to the driver update issue. The drivers (the PnP ones) in Win98 for the old S3 cards are the most updated available in most case's (probably aside from manufacturer sites). This just happens to be the case for most older cards (whatever they may be). ================================ When he starts the program, screen goes black and then it says in red: "Signal frequency is out of range, change signal timing." He ran into this problem before with something else and had to remove Quicktime to fix it. Win98, Gateway, STB Velocity 4400 video. Video mode is 800x600x16-bit. Display Gateway VX700 on STB Velocity 4400. Edited qtw.ini for Optimize=RAW. Tried program again; now it's working. ================================ Teletubbies--small black box that is one inch square appears in several teletubbies scenes. Same solution as the one for "Cant play videos" problem: Click on Start Click on Run Click on the Browse button On the Browse screen make sure where that "Look in" is looking in the CD Rom drive (it will say playwtt) Double click on the folder that reads "Support" Double click on the folder that reads "Winsys" Double click on the folder that reads "Directx" Then double click on DXTools.exe (it has a black circle with a big yellow x in it). This will take you back to the Run screen. Click OK. The DX driver tool screen will appear. Remove the check from "use direct draw hardware acceleration" by clicking on the box and then click OK. It will prompt you to restart the computer. Upon restarting, try the game. =============================== Some kind of video problems with vertical lines in small rectangle near top of screen. He isn't sure, but he's been told it used to work on here before. Rebooted system. Video set for 1024x768x256. Reinstalled QT from CD (g:\qtwfiles\qtinstal.exe); deleted existing versions; tried to run sample.mov and it locked up. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work; had to power down. Edited qtw.ini for Optimize=BMP. Tried program; works now. =============================
