macintosh.txt =================== Lockups on Imac or any Mac using System 8.0 and up. Make sure virtual memory is on. Also, set extensions manager (in control panel) to 8.x (whatever version) base level extensions. =================== Error 192 on any Macintosh Solution: This error simply means that the system does not meet the program requirements for the processor. They are trying to use a program on a 68030 that requires a 68040 or higher; or they are trying to use a program on a 68040 that requires a PowerPC processor, etc. Double-check the system information, check the Macintosh model information at http://www.info.apple.com/info.apple.com/applespec/applespec.taf and verify that the system meets the requirements for the program. =================== Acrobat Reader errors Error 9 and nothing shows up to print. The readme file works though, so does the main program. Cleaned CD and tried it. Click on Manual; Acrobat Reader 2.1 starts. "Error processing a page, problem reading this document (9). File contains information not understood by viewer." Tried this CD on a different Mac; it installed Acrobat 3.0 during install; and it works. So: need to use the updated Acrobat Reader from the CD. ====================== Assertion Failed error messages Lines 500 series: Hard drive name has special characters. Assertion Failed in Line 511, 513, 562 at STD.H in Accomplish based Jumpstart programs on newer Macintosh computers. Solution: This error can be caused by invalid characters in the name of the hard drive, such as '/ or \'. Change the name and remove any invalid characters. Try the program again. Lines 600 series: Make sure it has the proper Truetype fonts. The message you received means that your Mac is missing one or more necessary fonts. The fonts we use are TrueType Courier, TrueType Geneva, and TrueType Times. The fonts must be in the Fonts folder, which is in your System folder. They must not be in any kind of "Suitcase" file. Also make sure that you have no more than 128 fonts, as the Macintosh will only recognize the first 128. The fonts were originally supplied with your Mac and will be found on the system disks or CD. Just copy the fonts into your Fonts folder, and then restart the Mac and the program should run fine. Of course there's always going to be exceptions to the rules. Assertion failed in line 550 or line 640 in JumpStart Toddlers on a Mac using system 7.5.3 Solution: Look for an extension called 'Apple Speed Switch'. Try disabling this extension, restart the Mac and try running the program again. Apple Speed Switch is an after market extension that is often not found on newer Macs. This error is often caused by an extension conflict. Restart the Mac using a clean boot. Load only the extensions necessary to run the program. This will often solve the problem. Assertion Failed Line 632 in file STD.H in KnowledgeLand on a Macintosh Solution: This error is generated when the CD is not inserted into the CD-ROM drive. Make sure the CD is in the drive before running the program. =========================== BUG: The type 11 or type 25 crashes occurring at launch on the Mac programs such as XXXXX Blaster Ages 4-6, Typing Tutor Platinum, and Math for the Real World v1.1(only v1.1) can be fixed. These programs have a PICT file at launch which take up more memory on 7.5.1 and 7.5.5 when QT3.x is installed. These titles initially released when Qt2.5 was the norm so these bugs are just now appearing in numbers. SOLVE: 1. Drag and copy the program icon from the CD root to the Mac's desktop. Or the program startup ICON from the open icons. 2. click the icon once to highlight it 3. press command+ i (or the apple key with the ~ on it). 4. change the memory allocation from 60k to 80k or higher (Just click on 60 and change it). Click on the square at left top and close it. =========================== ERROR 'VACL CL_PrivateSlottedFile constructor File HD System folder Preferences 2GMUSER.DAT is not a Slotted File' on a Macintosh Solution: This error is encountered when the main 2GMUSER.DAT file has become corrupted. It comes with it and it doesn't support 720s only high density. She has both KW2 and MB+ on 720 diskettes. Told her to copy 720 to high density drives. ========================= Summary: INSUFFICENT HARD DRIVE SPACE FOR TEMPORARY STORAGE. Turned off virtual memory - same problem. turn off all extension. This is a known problem with the G3's. The disk is NTFS and not formatted correctly. Some have reformatted their hard dives and it has worked. NO FIX/SOLUTION. "Disk space critically low." User typically has 3 GB free on HD. Known problem in Sys8x with HFS Plus or NTFS formatting. Some customers reported reformatting the drive fixed the problem, but that's not an option for most. No solution available. ========================= Text invisible or very very dark and hard to see. Disable 7200 Graphics Acceleration in extensions. ========================== System 9.0 allows multiple desktops for different users on the system. Program loads and runs from his primary desktop, but not from one he set up for his daughter. When program starts, goes through KA logo etc, then opening song for JS Spanish goes by, and then about where the rabbit would appear and tell you to sign in, he gets: Trouble building usertabl.cfg :\121, instance has open file Looks like he may have his daughter's desktop a little too restricted. Told him it must be able to access entire CD drive, also the JS Spanish folder on HD, and the Preferences folder where it stores the data. He thinks he didn't allow it to access Preferences. He'll try that and get back to me. I'll let you know if that fixes it. This may be worth watching; we may get more like this if OS9 allows a can-o-worms like separate desktops with restrictions to system resources. ============================== Computer: I Mac or OS 8.0 Problem: Getting a " Not enough memory" message when trying to print from jumpstart KG98. Don't try troubleshooting! Solution: Upgrade to OS 8.5 ============================== Bookmark these links! When you need to get system information for a Macintosh these are your two best resources. http://www.info.apple.com/info.apple.com/applespec/applespec.taf http://www.macintoshos.com/macintosh.museum/index.shtml ============================== You know that you can learn the most intimate details of your Macintosh by launching the Apple System Profiler but did you realize that nearly every element of this handy utility can be turned into a clipping file? Just place your cursor over some element -- memory overview, for example -- and click and drag that element from the Apple System Profiler window to the desktop. Voila! That information is turned into a clipping file -- a clipping file whose information can be pasted into an email message to your favorite tech support representative. ========================== At sign in screen; error, data file cannot be created, user information will not be saved. Looks like it's trying to save to the CD drive or something. Needs to make sure the program is installed and run from HD and that the system file options are such that it will save to the proper folder on HD. Found the controls for that in Control Panel, General Controls: Last folder used in application, Folder which contains the application (or, Folder that is set by application), Documents folder. Told him to use the Folder which contains the application. Then run it from the HD. ============================ Leon wanted me to send this to all of you. I recently got a call about HyperStudio. The gentleman I spoke with had a network of Macs, but wanted to install it on each workstation separately. He was using Macs with OS9 on them. He was receiving an error trying to run the program under a student account. The error said the stack was in use by someone else. When trying to use it on a Admin account the program worked fine. I've placed the solution below. OS9 has a built in security feature, that's probably targeted towards schools. It's possible to have up to 4 different types of user accounts. There is the Admin account, normal to most networking OS's. Admin has the ability to do anything on the given computer. The other 3 types of accounts have limitations to one extent or another. The next account is the "Normal" account. This account has the ability to do almost everything. There are certain control panel items that they can't access, but that's about it. The next account is the "Limited" account. This account is limited to only those things Admin feels like assigning to it. There is a 4th account titled the "Panels" account. This is another limited type of account, it's a bit confusing so I don't think it'll be used much. The schools will probably be using the Limited account for students. That way they can't get into a bunch of stuff they shouldn't be in. All of these types of accounts are created and managed through the "Multiple Users" control panel, with the exception of the Admin account. Only the Admin log in can use the "Multiple Users" control panel. HyperStudio Install on a Limited Account under OS9 You'll need to have a Limited account already created, and be logging into the Admin account before you begin. Use the following steps to install, and setup HyperStudio for use by a Limited User account. Install 1. Insert the CD 2. Double click on the HyperStudio icon 3. Double click on whichever install you wish, either "Without CD Rom", or "with CD Rom" 4. Double click on HyperStudio Installer 5. Follow the prompts up to, but not including box with the Install button 6. Keep the Easy Install setting 7. Click on the Install Location button 8. Choose Select folder 9. Choose Users on the top button 10. Choose the Limited account which you want to have access to it. 11. Click on the Select button 12. Click on the Install button Setting Up the Rights for the Limited User 1. Click on the Apple 2. Go to Control Panels 3. Click on Multiple Users 4. Click on the appropriate Limited account 5. Click on the Open button 6. Click on Show Setup Details 7. Click on the Applications tab 8. Scroll down and place a checkmark in the box for HyperStudio Follow the next steps if your going to use removable media for HyperStudio (ie. floppies, zip disks, ect.) 9. Click on the Privileges tab 10. Place a checkmark in the box for Other removable media 11. You may also want to place a checkmark for CD Rom use ================================= Summary: SPEECH COULD NOT BE INITIALIZED FOR SPELL IT DELUXE. She says she never was able to sign in as a student, so she went in as visitor and it seemed to work. She eventually tried to sign in as a student and did something because now she can't get in even as a visitor. Checked HD; no TT7 items there (according to her). She says she does not see any documents folder in HD or desktop. I had her run TT7 Installer from CD; "run from HD"; installation successful; restarted. Ran it from HD. It's working now. =======================
