JSTyping.txt ======================= JumpStart Typing - SUPER CHEAT! Customer with JStyping said: "Within our first lesson, a 7 year old child figured out that by holding down the homerow key "f" during the "timed typing" tests, she could win full energy and win the power cards to win the game. She received her trophy within 10 minutes. I'm shocked there is no error count to safeguard against cheating. News spread like wildfire in my second grade computer class. How can I reset these programs?" ======================= Unable to Create Window error message (Typically because they ran the icon before the install was completely finished.) They need to make sure Quicktime is installed too. Run "d:\support\winsys\qt32.exe" to install Quicktime32. An alterate solution in case that doesn't work: Trying to install it. Says "Unable to create Window." Deleted JSTyping dir. Cleaned CD. Reinstalled it (suspect he didn't let it completely finish installation before). Ran it; works. - - - - - - - When she tries to run it, it says "unable to create window." Installed QT32 from the CD; it detected an incomplete install from before; had her do it fresh. Got an error: QT32 caused IPF in qt32.exe at 0167:0040ab64. Restarted Win98. Uninstalled all Quicktimes using Add/Remove. Deleted JSTyping dir. Reinstalled it. Ran into same error during the Quicktime installation. Restarted Win98 again (so the files wouldn't be locked); the qt*.* and *.qtc files said access denied; had to reset the attrib on them, then could delete them (finally). Now TRIED to reinstall QT32 again and it STILL says there was an incompleted attempt from before; told it to start a fresh one again; once more got the same error. Best info I could find says: delete all temp files; delete qt*.* and *.qtc from \windows and \windows\system dirs. Beware of other programs like Quicken which sometimes use these names. Called her back. Cleared out the temp files. C: has 3.55 GB free (10 GB total capacity). Used Find to locate all qt*.* and *.qtc files in system; deleted those that weren't part of Adobe Pagemill or Quicken, etc. Ran the QT32 from the CD again; this time it didn't mention prior version. Told it NOT to check for existing versions. It proceeded without errors and finished. Ran JSTyping. It's working (finally). Seems the key here is to NOT have it check for existing Quicktime versions, just skip that portion. ============================= Lockup in initial "stars" screen. This problem is usually due to outdated drivers. Download and install the latest version of your sound driver and video driver from the manufacturers' web sites. This is not necessarily the same site as the computer brand, but you should check with them first. After you update the video and sound drivers, then go to "http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/" or "http://www.microsoft.com/directx" and download DirectX 7.0A Home Version, and install it following their directions. Then try your JumpStart Typing again. ============================ JSTyping - network - workstation can't find CDROM drive Network version. Runs on all but 1 machine. On that one it says it can't find the CDROM. The target is identified as the server. They have uninstalled and reinstalled and get the same error. The system is set up the same as the others. Access rights set the same as the others. Deleted contents of KA dir, also JSTYPING dir, and removed jstyping section from ka.ini. Reinstalled it from the server. Restarted system afterward. Tried it; still says unable to find CDROM. Her shortcut was pointing to the server; I had her go through menus to get to it locally; same thing. Ron H says make sure it's mapped to the server; she says she's running a specific network path. So she needs to map the drive. Explorer. Look for network drives; she only has Z. Network Neighborhood. Look for server, go into the folder or root where program is. Right click on KA folder, Map, gave it T:. Reconnect at login. OK. C: drive. KA folder. Delete JStyping dir. Ran setup.exe for the program from T: and reinstalled it. Ran it; still says unable to find CDROM. She had also mentioned that it would jam up with >5 users online. Ron decided to remove and reinstall to the server again, using drag & drop method to a new folder on server. Then re-ran the setup from workstation (T:\apps\jstypn.net\setup.exe). Chose express install (she says she never got an option like that before). Ran it through Start, Programs, etc. Still says unable to find CDROM. Rechecked mapping to server. Deleted program dir and ka.ini. Reinstalled it again. STILL asking to install DirectX. Checked space on C:, 163 MB free. Deleted all temp files. Closed all bg tasks. Deleted KA dir again. Reinstalled again. Tried it; SAME. Went to machine next to it. Set the same mapping etc. Deleted dir. Reinstalled it here. (It was still asking about DirectX here.) Ran into another error during the install. Ron advised customer to get DirectX7 and download it to the server so it can be put on all the stations. ========================== JumpStart Typing Network Problem: Will not save names. Solution: 1. Delete program from server. 2. Reinstall to the server. As long as you install the program to the same location on the server you should not have to reinstall on the workstations. 3. Teacher must enter all names before students use the program. “They may enter more names as needed.” 4. The students must select their names from the list. They must not type in their names. ============================= Mac - not saving names When she tries to exit program, gets some kind of fatal error message. When she starts program again, there are no saved names. Checked general controls; it's set for last folder used in application; changed it to folder that is set by application. Tried program. Tried to exit; still got error: unable to find or open file JST-Play.dat. Deleted program from HD. (Had trouble emptying trash because some of this was locked; deleted it anyway.) She couldn't find her System folder around, so used Find to look for any remaining jst-play files; deleted them. Cleaned CD. Tried it. Dragged the "copy to your HD" icon to install it. Went to HD to run it. This time it exited without problems; went back in, names are there now. ============================== Screen offset horizontally or vertically It only shows up in far right side of screen. Or, screen is offset vertically and only shows up at bottom of screen. Video set for 800x600x16-bit. DirectX not in Add/Remove Programs; no dxsetup or dxmedia found; dxdiag doesn't provide option to restore display drivers. Computer 2 months old. Tried changing the video to 256 colors; applied w/o restarting. Tried program; works. ===================================== Unable to find init winsock. Nothing in the database concerning this message. She starts it from autorun; chooses Run; a few moments later it gives that error. She has AOL; maybe they altered winsock.dll or something on here? (I remember a tech note that mentioned this but I can't find it anywhere now.) She says the program used to work OK. Deleted program dir, cleaned CD. Reinstalled it. Tried it; works. ================================
