Definitions:
APRS: Automatic Postion Reporting System is a packet network
that reports the position of a radio station. A fixed
station simply transmits it's longituide and latitude.
A mobile station can use the Global Positioning System
to update the location of the radio transmitter as it moves.
ARES: Amateur Radio Emergency Service: A volunteer group that
helps during disasters. It also on occasion will provide
communications for public events such as marathons,
walk-a-thons or other public service events.
ATV: Amateur Television
Beacon: A station that transmits a continous signal, usually
CW but sometimes digital or voice, to allow
stations to detect conditions for long range communications.
CTCSS: continuous tone coded squelch system
CTDSS: continuous tone decoded squelch system
CW: Morse Code Transmissions
DCS: Digital Coded Squelch. A digital protocol used
similar to CTCSS, but can be used to identify
the transmitter.
Digital: A transmission that uses a computer protocol to
transmit information over a radio frequency.
Duplex: A two frequency transmission. Repeaters, Cell Phones
and stations can use duplex.
Packet: A digital transmission using a protocol called
AX.25.
PL: Motorola´s Private Line®, another name for CTCSS
Repeaters: A radio relay station with a input and output frequency.
Simplex: One frequency direct communications

These are used to gain access to repeaters or for stations
to listen on a frequency for a certain CTCSS to open up the
radio receiver. For example two stations could select a
frequency such as 146.52, set CTCSS to 77.0 Hz and when they
wish to contact each other they will simply transmit to open
the other stations receiver to hear the transmission.
