Brief historical notes:
Based on the alum history of Syracuse University the first campus hamradio club was established in 1935 by Charles Floring, W2AK, and his college of engineering mates. As soon as the group's members were graduated several years later there was no continuity.
In the 60s a group of student hams established SU Amateur Radio Club (SUARC). They setup a radio station with its call WA2SDY. SUARC has been on and off ever since, depending on the situation when they had student hams to run the club or not. In the late 90s until 2003 SUARC and WA2SDY had been inactive due to lack of students' interest. In 2003 the SU Admin shut down the club station due to a major renovation of the building given to the school of information studies. Followed by the expiration of WA2SDY.
In 2004, Wyn W. Purwinto, AB2QV, took over and established the Amateur Radio Club at Syracuse University (ARC@SU). In 2004/05 there were four student hams who had a chance to run the club as its officers. The club has been voluntarily supported by several on and off campus non-student hams (faculty, staffs, retirees and volunteers). Any student ham of SU, SUNY-ESF and Upstate Medical University may apply and join the club. Please send email to the contact person mentioned below.
Supported by several radio amateurs who are affiliated with SU and SUNY-ESF (students, faculty, staff, alumni, retirees, students' parents and family members) as well as the CNY Support Group for Young Radio Amateurs including:
ARC@SU opens to any radio amateur who is AFFILIATED with SU, SUNY-ESF or Upstate Medical University (student, faculty, staff, alumnus, retiree, student's parent and family member) and wants to be a member. Please contact the officers mentioned above in order to apply.
