SKYWARN Recognition Day 2014, Honolulu - Fri December 5 - Sat December 6, 2014

Annually, the National Weather Service recognizes the importance of the amateur radio service and community weather spotters by hosting SKYWARN Recognition Day. It is co-sponsored with the ARRL.

This web page details the arrangements at the Honolulu, Hawaii office prior to the event. Information provided by Clem KH7HO and Jackson KH6DQ.

The Event Objective

SKYWARN Recognition Day was developed in 1999 by the National Weather Service and the American Radio Relay League. It celebrates the contributions that volunteer SKYWARN radio operators make to the National Weather Service. During the day SKYWARN operators visit NWS offices and contact other radio operators across the world.

The 14th edition of SkyWarn Recognition Day is one week from now. As of today over 74 NWS Offices are registered for the 24 hour event. The event will be from 2:00 p.m. HST, Friday, Dec. 5, 2014 to 2:00 p.m. HST, Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014.

This week the final touches will be put on the website and the official endorsement checklist. The final checklist will likely be posted Thursday for download. Stay Tuned!

SKYWARN Recognition Day is an opportunity for National Weather Service Forecast Offices across the United States to thank SKYWARN Spotters for their efforts in obtaining timely severe weather reporting for the protection of life and property. This is the SKYWARN program's main mission. "To Save Lives".

The Location in Hawai'i

The Hawaii NWS call sign will be KH6SW. It will be listed in the official SKYWARN Recognition Day web site at http://hamradio.noaa.gov.

The locator is Latitude 21.29831 North; Longitude -157.81649 West. BL11ch

In Honolulu, the SKYWARN Recognition Day 2014 event will be held at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Honolulu located in the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The Schedule

Date: NWS stations will operate Saturday, December 6, 2012, from 0000 - 2400 UTC (2:00 p.m., Friday, December 5, 2014 to 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 6, 2014, HST). The Hawaii operations will be on the All-Star linked repeaters as listed below.

At 12/05/2014 7:30pm The Honolulu Weather service Skywarn HAM operator will make a call out on 146.880 on the nightly EARC net for contacts. The report and information needed is:

  • Your call sign
  • the signal report (eg, 59)
  • location
  • and a one or two word description of the weather occurring at your site (eg, "sunny", "clear", "partly cloudy", "windy").

The Honolulu Weather service Skywarn HAM operator will make a call out on HF Nets in Hawaii.

The Frequencies and Modes

For Oahu information, we will use the Allstar linked repeaters on 444.350 MHz (PL 103.5) at Diamond Head, which will be linked to 444.325 MHz (PL 103.5), 146.980 MHz (PL 88.5) and the 146.76 MHz (No PL) repeaters on Oahu.

It will also be connected to the IRLP Western Reflector 9219 and EchoLink Node: 7203 *WX-TALK*. The repeater is 443.425+ PL 114.8. KH6SW will be the NCS for the VOIP net on Friday, Dec 5 from 11 pm till midnight.

The repeaters and KH6SW are also reachable via the Hawaii SCD RACES VHF repeater system.

HF Phone may be on: 7080 LSB voice/USB digital, 7088, 7188 kHz LSB.

The Exchange

Call sign, signal report, QTH, and a one or two word description of the weather occurring at your site ("sunny", "partly cloudy", "windy", etc.).
