West Texas Section News June 2010

News From Around West Texas.

I hope you were able to attend HamCom this year. It gets better each year and 2010 was no exception. We were so swamped at the ARRL booth that I was unable to do much visiting but I did see several West Texans at Plano. Next year will be even better because HamCom 2011 will feature the ARRL National Convention and Expo. Start making plans to attend in 2011. One of the highlights of HamCom is the annual W5DXCC Dinner. Our own Les Bannon (WF5E) of Midland was the last DX’er standing in the DX stand-down. Congratulations to Les. May you continue to receive that honor for many more years to come.

Last month I commented on the column written by my friend and fellow Section Manager, Bob Beaudet (W1YRC), entitled Charlie’s Whistle that appears monthly in the El Paso ARC Newsletter. Clay (K5TRW) has provided us with a link to the back issues of Charley’s Whistle. Read and enjoy his stories at http://www.w1ddd.org/whistle.html

A funny thing happened on the way to the park in Abilene. The KCARC members have been practicing their fox hunting skills all spring and were getting good at finding that wily varmint. Unfortunately, the wheels came off last month. Someone let their guard down and a couple of hams from the Brownwood club slipped into town for the May hunt. You guessed it! Griff (N5AG) and Billy (W5UMR) of the Brownwood Amateur Radio Club beat all the locals to the fox. Will Griff and Billy return to defend their honor next month? Will the KCARC fox hunters stage a comeback? Do I sense the beginning of a rivalry? Tune in next month for an update.

The ARRL 10 Meter Contest is a fun event but it can be very unpredictable during this portion of the sunspot cycle. It can be feast or famine. West Texan’s placed high in the final results of the 2009 event.  W5AJ had the highest Single Op Mixed Mode High Power score for the West Gulf Division. Robert’s score placed him in the top ten in the nation. WB5KYJ (Rick) turned off all his vhf/uhf gear for the weekend and led the WORLD in the QRP Phone category. Rick now holds our WTX Section record and maybe some others. Other WTX Section winners were N5NA CW High Power, N5DO CW Low Power, K5HCT Phone High Power, WB5R Phone Low Power, and N5LUL Mixed Mode Low Power.  In the Multi-Op category, WA5PFJ teamed up with WA5PFI to lead the High Power category, while KS5Z teamed up with WA5VSK to lead the Low Power Multi-Op category.  There were 25 clubs in the nationwide Local Club category and the Midland ARC moved back up to the top spot for the second time in the last three years. MARC members participating were W5AJ, N5NA, K5HCT, WA5PFJ, and N5OVH.  The Panhandle ARC (K5BZH, N5SM, and N5ZC) placed second in the West Texas club competition. Seventeen West Texans participated.

The Ransom Canyon ARC has applied for ARRL Affiliated Club status and should be getting their charter soon. This is a good time to remind all Affiliated Clubs that you need to update your information with the League annually. The IT folks at HQ have made a decision that updates may be made only by individuals on their approved list. Unfortunately, this list often does not include your club’s current officers. Your club’s database at HQ lists your officers, date of last update, etc. Your Affiliated Club Coordinator and I no longer have access to that information but if you have problems updating your information, I will attempt to assist you.  It would be a great help if the clubs in WTX would provide me with a list of current officers and the primary contact person for the club. I cannot serve you if I have no way of contacting you.

Mike Oberlish (KD9KC) of El Paso has been working closely with the sponsors of the Summits on the Air (SOTA) awards program. Thanks to Mike’s work, the US W5 call area has been approved for SOTA activation. More information at http://www.sota.org.uk/  Joey (KC5MVZ) reminds me that Lubbock hams will be assisting in the Ironman 2010 Triathlon on June 27, 2010. If you can assist, give Joey a call. The K5N crew continues to make plans for their six meter DL88 grid expedition to the Talley campsite in the Big Bend National Park.  The Big Bend ARC will be supporting the group.

Are you ready for Field Day 2010? Unfortunately, I am not. Carla’s surgery was cancelled only hours before she was to enter the hospital and we are awaiting rescheduling. There is a good possibility that FD may find me at her bedside rather then on the radio. I hope to be available to take your Field Day messages Sunday morning on the Big Bend Emergency Net 3922 KHz at 8:30 AM CDT (1330 Z). If I am not available Sunday morning, Section Traffic Manager W5NPR or Section Emergency Coordinator WA5ZFH will take your traffic. They will make it work!

Hope to work you during Field Day,

John Dyer

Comments SEC:

Now May is behind us and everyone is gearing up for Field Day 2010. Best of all there is a lot of good competition thru out West Texas. It is a great time to test our skills and bring new folks into amateur radio. Take time to answer the questions of the youngsters and introduce them to amateur radio. What better way than to allow them to operate the GOTA station. Fun, food, fellowship, and ham radio. What more could you ask for. If you are not at a location where there is a Field Day set up consider going to one near you. You will not be disappointed.... Hope to hear you on the air....

Please take note of the comments from Lew Maxwell KB5HPT, El Paso County. Let’s do our best to make this a reality.

Following Comments taken from EC Monthly Reports:

Lubbock, County:

A planning committee meeting was held to support to discuss Support of a Boy Scout Adventure troop. A committee of Leland Fellows and Gary Harold were to look into it and report back what will be required. A sub-committee was appointed to do some more work on the trailer.

Discussions were held about field day preparation. A group set up field operation as special event for Storm Warn Group for the anniversary of the Lubbock Tornado.

John Habbinga KC5ZRQ called the meeting.

During the month of May we have been helping our local VA Health Care Center get their amateur radio station operational. I would like to urge any ARES group or club to contact their local VA clinic or hospital and assist them in setting up an amateur radio station. They have been instructed to put an amateur radio station for emergency backup communications. They have the funding available. All they need are amateur radio operators to help set it up and man it. They are requesting Winlink 2000 be installed. The DHS requires that they do the background checks and finger printing as well as their normal volunteer training requirements.
