Search for Colorado City missing teenager Hailey Dunn

Recently a Colorado City, Texas teenager Hailey Dunn was reported to be missing. Both Law Enforcement and citizen groups were very concerned and things began to happen quickly. On Thursday night January 6 and early on Friday January 7, Hams in Big Spring, having heard a request for HELP in searching for the missing girl, gathered their resources and answered the call. Howard County Emergency Coordinator Alan Nichols KC5NHV with assistance from Paul Johnson KC5ALH started an ARES Net on the West Texas Connection at 2 PM. Net control was soon established on both the WTX connection and the Big Spring repeater W5AW. The search area covered the country from the west side of Colorado City to Big Spring.  Two Command Posts were activated in Colorado City. One for Law Enforcement and one for the Citizen Groups at the Family Dollar Store. Derek Rogers K5ISS set up at the Family Dollar Store to coordinate and handle radio traffic and messages in the area and to relay back to net control in Big Spring. Traffic was taken and distributed to the local law enforcement and investigators involved. The search ended at 5 PM and resumed at 8 AM on Saturday.

Those who answered the call to help in the search from Big Spring were Alan Nichols KC5NHV, Paul Johnson KC5ALH, Iain Sloan KD5YOW, Marvin Gross KE5EUR, Dustin Clark KF5FTY, Chris Churchwell KC5DFZ, and Jesse Stark KD5SKZ.

WTX Section Emergency Coordinator J.T. Caldwell WA5ZFH contacted Alan KC5NHV and asked what he needed in the way of help. Alan requested assistance in covering areas east and north of Colorado City. J.T. contacted Bill Shaw KJ5DX ARES Taylor County ARES Emergency Coordinator in Abilene requesting his help. Bill contacted Gary Armstrong KC5NOX Sweetwater County ARES Emergency Coordinator and between them, they soon had a group assembled and began their search. Daniel Walton KE5KUR was assigned to the Command Post to relay their traffic. Kendall Thomas KC5FFQ set up a cross band out of his truck so they could have radio contact using handhelds with the NCS. They searched a large area using orange flagging tape to mark searched areas.

Those answering the call from Abilene were Bill Shaw KJ5DX, Kendall Thomas KC5FFQ, Daniel Walton KE5KUR, Derek Rogers K5ISS, Mel Saunders AL7PB, Karen Saunders WL7KS, Shawna Shaw KB5QLG a paramedic, Tony Washburn KF5HLA, Charles Tice KE5OGP, and from the VFD Jacob Tucker and Lt. Taylor Partain.

From Sweetwater were Gary Armstrong KC5NOX, Ken Elliott KB5BZT, and Mike Haigood KE5YF.

I wish to thank all who participated in the search for Hailey Dunn and we remain hopeful she will be found. All can be proud of a job well done..

As covered in last month’s WTX Section News, my term ends on June 30, 2011 and I will not be a candidate for re-election. We are currently in the nomination period for SM. To my knowledge, no papers have been filed. Section Manager Nomination information can be found at http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Field%20Org/FSD-129.pdf

Texas QSO Party results are online and the Midland ARC placed third in the club scoring with three participants. With over a hundred members, imagine what they could score if more members participated in the qso party. Members of the Sun City ARC made a combined 252 contacts in this year’s event. Perennial Single-Op winner Dave Cockrum N5DO left the comforts of home this year and went on the road. Once again, David returned to Alpine with a first place win. This time it was in the Single-Op Mixed Mobile category. Joel Bryant N5XTR had the top score in the Texas Single-Op Mobile Phone category. Two Midland hams Alan Sewell N5NA and “Gator” Bowen N5RZ duked it out in the Texas Single- Op Mobile CW category with Alan coming our slightly ahead. Alan and Gator placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in their category for the state.

The first correct response to last month’s trivia question came from Randy Karch N5OVH of Midland. The answer was the Kon-Tiki and the callsign was LI2B. Early correct answers also came from K5BZH, K1UQI, KE5YCW, K5LCL, KM5AD, and K5RS. The trivia had special meaning for me because, as a kid, I had a paperback copy of the book about the Kon-Tiki and it was one of my favorites. Randy’s question for this month delves into the history of SSB on the ham bands.  Who in 1933 began single-sideband voice experiments on 75-meter lower sideband and what was his call? The first correct response will get to pick next month’s question.

Do not forget the 2011 West Gulf ARRL Membership Contest. ARRL Affiliated Clubs can win equipment and gift certificates for recruiting new ARRL members. Awards go to the top ten West Gulf clubs in the competition. Last year’s big West Gulf winner was our own San Angelo ARC.  Will San Angelo be able to repeat? Will another WTX club rise to the challenge and out recruit the other clubs in Texas and Oklahoma? Make sure that your club president discusses the contest at your next meeting.

The West Texas ARRL Section Convention will be held in conjunction with the Midland ARC St. Patrick’s Day Hamfest on March 19, 2011. ARRL DXCC, VUCC, and WAS card checking services will be centrally located at the ARRL Booth for your convenience this year. Les Bannon WF5E will be available to check your DXCC cards at the ARRL Booth from 9 AM to 11 AM. ARRL Awards Managers Mark Cranford N5XXD, Sara Gail Cranford N5ZMP, and John Dyer AE5B will be available throughout the day to check your cards for other ARRL awards. Please have your application completed before presenting it and your cards to the checkers.

Comments SEC:

December brings to a close a very quiet year, as we had no large emergencies. Looking back, our numbers continue to grow slowly and in some locations, we have made great strides in training, radio nets, and larger participation in Public Service Events. We have added several more EC's and 1 DEC. Plans are underway for the Midland Hamfest where there will be an ARRL Forum. I encourage all that can to come and take part. Your thoughts and input helps to improve our ARRL and make it more responsive to our needs. We have been extremely fortunate in WTX to have excellent ARRL representatives. Changes are coming in 2011 that will impact our WTX Area. More on this in coming months.

Following Comments taken from EC Monthly Reports:

Tom Green County:

The Tom Green County ARES group held their monthly meeting on 16 Dec 2010 with a good meeting discussing the new roofing project for the city/county Emergency Operations Center. All of the HF, VHF and UHF support antennas that were on the roof, had to be taken off the roof before Thanksgiving to make room for the contractor to do a complete reroofing project on the EOC. The group discussed the projected time frame on when to look at reinstalling the antennas back up on the EOC in January, after the reroofing project was completed. With time permitting, the group reviewed other agenda items and talked about another workday at the EOC and some training dates for training with the WebEOC at the EOC. The group had a good discussion about the upcoming HSMM-MESH project that we have been working on for the past several months. After the main meeting, the group started testing and programming several of the pieces of equipment that will be used as part of the groups HSMM-MESH project. January will be a busy month for us, with Skywarn training coming up, working on reinstalling the antennas back up on the EOC, and working on the group’s project. The good old rain we had just before Christmas was good to a point, but we still have the good old West Texas dry weather to contain with and that does mean the threat of more Wildland fires in the area.
