West Texas Section News December 2010

News From Around West Texas.

Hello Neighbors,

In October of 2002, I became your ARRL Section Manager. In the first three months of that term, I traveled 3500 miles, made ten club visits, and saw many West Texas hams. Because of my health problems, I have been unable to make a single visit since Field Day. My inability to meet directly with you has taken its toll on our membership because our ARRL numbers in WTX have dropped dramatically over the last six months. I can no longer be the Section Manager that I have been in the past nor can I be the Section Manager that you need. It has been a great ride. I have had my 8 seconds on this bronco and am reaching for the pick-up man. It is time for a new face, new energy, and some younger legs. The January 2011 QST will soon be in your mailbox. It contains a call for nominations for the position of West Texas Section Manager. I will not be a candidate for re-election and will retire when my present term ends on June 30, 2011. If you are interested in running for SM, these links describe the election process and the duties of the SM.

In short, you need to get a minimum of five WTX ARRL members to sign your petition and forward it to HQ. Deadline for nominations is March 4, 2011. Ballots will be mailed to the membership on April 1, 2011 and are due back at HQ by May 20, 2011.  The term is for two years, running from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2013.

Last month’s WTX News included a bit of trivia from amateur radio’s past that generated many emails. The first person to email with the correct answer was Lynn Bailey (K5AVJ) of Buffalo Gap. Hedy Lamarr was the Hollywood actress that invented technology that made current cell phone communications possibly. It is typical that it took decades for hardware to catch up with science. Since he was the Early Bird, Lynn gets to select this month’s question, which is later in the newsletter. Correct answers in the first 24 hours came from K5AVJ, K5BZH, W5JUV, N5DO, WA5ROE, K1UQI, KM5AD, and KS5Z.

WTX SEC WA5ZHF recently announced two new appointments to our ARES organization. Mike Dominy (KD5URW) is our new District Emergency Coordinator for District 4. We now have a DEC in all five WTX ARES Districts. The first time since I have been SM that we have been fully staffed. The other new appointment is D. J. Ray (N5FRN) as Jones County Emergency Coordinator. D. J. recently moved to Stamford and has been an ARRL Official Observer for several years. D. J. will be an asset to the eastern part of our section.

In a separate email, you received the information regarding the special Limited Edition of the 75th Anniversary patch. This is a once-in-a-lifetime patch and is only available to West Gulf hams.  Congratulations to the Sun City ARC, Midland ARC and the San Angelo ARC on qualifying for renewal of their ARRL Special Service Club status. They join the El Paso ARC in being honored as clubs that go that extra mile to serve their membership and their community. If your club is interested in qualifying as a Special Service Club, contact our WTX Affiliated Club Coordinator Clay Emert (K5TRW) k5trw@elp.rr.com . Congratulations to the Big bend ARC. They are celebrating their 25th anniversary as an ARRL Affiliated Club. If your club is not affiliated with the ARRL, Clay can help you also. Remember, once affiliated, always affiliated. If your group once was affiliated, all you need do is update your information to become active again.

The ARRL 10 Meter contest was this month. In the past, most of our WTX activity was in the Midland/Odessa area but thanks to K5BZH, interest in the contest has taken off in the Panhandle. Jim has been researching WTX activity in the contest and we could have sat a record for participation in this year’s event….if all or you remember to send in your logs. K5BZH is a major supporter of Straight Key Night (SKN) and has done research on our WTX participation in SKN. It is a lot of fun to break out the old J-38 or mechanical bug and try your hand (fist) at operating without the aid of all the fancy electronics. Some even carry the event a bit further by operating with vintage equipment. The event begins at 0000Z on Jan 1 (6:00 PM New Year’s Eve) and runs for 24 hours. OK,OK…Yes I know it is different with you guys out in El Paso but you know what I mean J  Jim has put together an excellent write-up on Straight Key Night 2011 that I will forward to you in a separate mailing after we get all the presents unwrapped and turkey devoured.

Before I sign off, here is Lynn’s trivia question for December.

“In 1947, a team of explorers on a raft began a 101-day voyage across the Pacific Ocean using amateur radio for communications.  What was the name of the raft and the call sign of the radio station?”

The first reader with the correct answer will get to pick next month’s question.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and do not call me after about 2:30PM Christmas Day. I will be taking a nap

Comments SEC:

November found most of us enjoying the Holidays, family, stuffing ourselves and giving thanks for all we have. West Texas continues to remain extremely dry with little to no measurable moisture for several months. Fires are a real threat with dry vegetation and the WTX winds to spread them. Skywarn Appreciation Day was a success with many of you participating at your local Weather Services. Using multiple modes of operation it helps us test our capabilities should they be needed in an emergency.

I want to welcome Mike Dominy KD5URW of San Angelo as our District 4 Emergency Coordinator. The WTX area is comprised of five districts and with Mike’s appointment we now have a full complement of District Emergency Coordinators. Since my next report will not come before January I want to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year..

J.T. Caldwell WA5ZFH West Texas Section Emergency Coordinator

I tried to include upcoming club meetings this month and it turned out to be more difficult then I expected. Most of the data came from club web pages but some have not been updated in awhile. I need to hear from an officer in each club to make sure this data is correct. I apologize for any errors. With your help, we can have an accurate calendar of upcoming meetings/events in WTX.
