News From Around West Texas.

WTX hams have several activities planned for September and October. Midland County ARES will be providing communications support for the Confederate Air Force Air Show. Bill Taylor (KD4LXC) will have a WW2 radio display set up along with Midland ARC’s Special Event Station at the Air Show. The San Angelo ARC has a couple of Special Events planned for September and October but I do not have the dates. More information next month. The San Angelo club had an interesting program in July that I wish I could have attended. Their guest speaker was Dr. Steve Lyons of the San Angelo National Weather Service. Dr. Lyons is the Meteorologist in Charge at the San Angelo office. If the name sounds familiar, you may remember Dr. Lyons from The Weather Channel on Cable TV, where he served as their severe weather and hurricane expert.

The Key City ARC continues to chase foxes all around Taylor County. You would think they would have found them all by now but apparently, there is few left hiding in the bushes. I hope to get over to Abilene for one of their Fox Hunts soon but the weather is going to have to cool off a lot. Not sure how long I would last trying to chase down an elusive fox in 100-degree weather. How about a Fall hunt?  I received a note from Howard Collier (WB5EKW) concerning his involvement with the design and outfitting of the EOC room for Hendrick Medical Center. When completed, the hospital EOC will have full hf/vhf/uhf and D-Star capabilities. The cost of the installation was split between the Department of Homeland Security and the Hendrick Medical Center.

The Big Bend ARC will be providing communications support for the chase teams at the Big Bend Balloon Bash over the three-day Labor Day Weekend. The club also operates the concession stand at Sunday evening’s Fire Concert and Balloon Glow at Alpine’s Buck Stadium. Labor Day Weekend in the high mountain desert with hot air balloons and the Big Bend ARC. Sounds like a good excuse for a club visit. Join us in Alpine. You will be glad you came.

ARRL President Kay Craigie has appointed John Stratton (N5AUS) as West Gulf Division Vice Director. John previously served the WG Division as Assistant Director and ex-officio West Gulf Legal Counsel. I have had the pleasure of working with John Stratton during the last two sessions of the Texas legislature as he led our battle to protect amateur radio from the misguided efforts of Austin politicians to place our mobile equipment in the same category as cell phones. If you were one of the many WTX hams that were involved in showering Austin with phone calls and emails during the last two sessions, it was John Stratton and his volunteers that you were supporting. Those of you that attended HamCom or Austin Summerfest probably met John in person. If not, you have worked with him and he has worked for you and the ARRL for several years. I look forward to having John Stratton on our West Gulf Team.

Anyone know what ever happened to Riley?  You ask Riley who? Surely, you jest. We all know Riley Hollingsworth (K4ZDH), formerly the Special Counsel for the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau, also known as the “Chief Enforcer.” Some of former inhabitants of late night 75 meter talk radio probably have other more colorful terms for Riley but thanks to his efforts, our bands are no longer x-rated. While with the FCC, Riley seldom held back on his opinions but did you ever wonder what Riley might have to say if he could take off his FCC hat and actually speak his mind? It is going to happen! Now retired, Riley Hollingsworth is going to be our keynote speaker at the 2011 ARRL National Convention at HamCom 2011. Hang on to you hats. This is going to be fun.

If you sent me information this month and it didn’t show up in the Newsletter, I have had some computer problems this month. I think I was able to salvage all my mail but if you were left out, I apologize. Now that the Newsletter is finished, I plan to start a rebuilding project on this old antique box. 21st Century here I come! And speaking of the 21st Century let me remind you that ARRL news from West Texas is now available on Twitter at http://twitter.com/arrlwtx. I post news of interest to WTX ARRL members as it happens during the month.  Periodically check the site or, even better, sign on the site to keep up with events.

See you next month,

John Dyer

Comments SEC:

July was a very quiet month with no severe weather or other problems reported. I am impressed with the fact the net activity continues to grow with more nets and better participation. In addition many or adding various methods to listen in and check in to these nets. Some through linked repeaters using VOIP linking repeaters directly and IRLP. D-Star is showing up around WTX and shows some good uses in our EMC world along with a multitude of new software programs.

Public Service events continue to do well. Bicycle races and in some cases displays in malls of amateur emergency communications capabilities brings amateur radio much support. Kudos to all who volunteer your time and efforts to our hobby and especially to those who keep the systems working.

Following Comments taken from EC Monthly Reports:

Tom Green County:

The Tom Green County ARES group held their monthly meeting on 15 July 2010. We had a good meeting with the group discussing several items on the group’s agenda. Some of the ideas where some possible exercises for the upcoming SET in October; reviewed what still need to be done with the antennas and the radio room at the city/county EOC; looked at another work day for working in the radio room; and reviewed training dates at the EOC for all members to get some WebEOC training.

El Paso County:

The equipment testing this month was with the HSMM-MESH nodes. We are still exploring the DRATS program. We were able to use the chat features, send and receive message forms such as the ICS-213, memos, etc. We could upload and download files to and from each station. The radio used in this exercise is a Linksys WRT54 series router. The D-RATS program is the DSTAR low speed data program. On July 28 El Paso County ARES participated in a Tactical Interoperable Communications Plan (TICP) exercise with Dona Ana County, NM ARES. This was a State of New Mexico Region 6 (including Otero, Dona Ana, Grant, Sierra, Hidalgo, and Luna Counties) exercise. The TICP covers all facets of communications from fire, police and amateur radio. The purpose of the exercise was to test the plan and make any corrections if needed. El Paso County ARES currently has a Cooperative Agreement with Dona Ana County ARES which was exercised during this event. Upon request from Dona Ana County ARES we agree to respond to emergencies/disasters in the Chaparral and Santa Teresa, NM communities do to here close proximity to EL Paso. Amateur radio was the sole means of communications at the beginning of the exercise do to some public safety equipment malfunctions. The problems were quickly resolved and all communications plans ran smoothly for the remainder of the exercise.  We provided support for two Dana Ana County Sheriff Department locations and one station was located with the Las Cruces Fire Department ICP. The operators involved in the exercise were Dale, KD5YBG, Warren, KE5APX, Ed, KD5MFS, and myself, KB5HPT.
