BRIEF STORY OF KUMAGAYA

I was born and have been growing up in the city of Kumagaya located about seventy kilo-metres or forty-four miles north of Tokyo.
Kumagaya has 158,624 (01/OCT/2002) people and covering an area of eighty-six square kilo-metres. She is the largest city in northern Saitama prefecture. The city cituated on an alluval fan created by the Arakawa River and is blessed with clear spring water.
Kumagaya is proud of its role as the birthplace of Kumagai Jiro Naozane, a smurai mentioned in the "Heike Monogatari", a well-known tale written in the Kamakura Period (1192-1333). The Heike Monogatari chronicles the struggle between the Heike and Genji clans who fought for control of Japan toward the end of the twentyth century. Naozane lived during this tumultous time, when warrior clans from countryside began wresting power from the noble families of the imperial court in Kyoto. Naozane has a special place in the hearts of the people of Kumagaya and a statue capturing his courageous spirit stands in front of the railway station of Kumagaya.
