Wellcome To My Shack

Skanti/Plessey TRP8255

Skanti-Plessey SRP 8255

1.6 MHz - 30 MHz 250 watt Transceiver out of a National Radio Communication System cabin

The NRCS was a HF communications used by the British Army.  104 NRCS stations were manufactured - 89 trailer mounted mobile stations and 15 static transportable stations.

I own a couple of  Kenwood TS-870s and the one on top is solely used for digital modes.

and the first HF transceiver I owned the Kenwood TS-140s is now sold on.
For matching up the 160m loop i use
the MFJ-989C and for data the internal ATU works very well.
On VHF 2m only i use the FT-857D
A
SignaLink USB is used mainly for Data modes.

Helpfull Notes TS-870

The variable AGC  helps the receive audio quality. Setting it to auto is best but manualy ajustment require works well too.

The TX audio from most any micraphone is good and the TX EQ features really helps get that nice bottom end rag chew audio to that pile up high end audio.

The Processor features used in conjunction with the TX EQ and Bandwidth, Carrier Shift Settings are amazing and can produce some amazing results no matter what mic you put in line. The settings i prefer is as follows.

PROC on set for max of 10dB compression,
TX EQ on, Menu 25 PROC LOW 3,
 Menu 26 PROC HI -3,
 Menu 29 TX WIDTH 3000,
 Menu 30 TX SHIFT 100,
 Menu 31 TXEQ b.

A feature that is usefull setting up the TX audio is the MONITOR function.  The 2nd antenna input useful for connecttion of  Dummy Load for audio setup. The Diamond V-2000 triband base antenna operating on frequency bands 6m/2m/70cm utilises a linear phase shift design to couplethe different frequency band selections together.

On receive the best settings i prefer is as follows.

AGC on AUTO (MENU 01 AUT/MAN ON) or if in manual set to 12 O’ Clock,
 LOW filter set to 0,
 HIGH filter set to 2.600,
AUTO NOTCH off, N.R off, BEAT CANCEL off.

If you do need to use the AUTO NOTCH, N.R. or BEAT CANCEL

Menu 13 LINE ENH ON,
 Menu 14 LINE ENH 4,
 Menu 15 SPAC 2,
 Menu 16 SP BEAT 4,
 Menu 17 SP NOTCH 4,
 Menu 18 TRACK ON.

In bad QRM conditions from adjacent frequencies`

 LOW filter to 400,
HIGH to 1.800,
and turn on the AIP, if you are still getting QRM from adjacent frequencies and experiment turning the NOTCH or N.R. ON.
The BEAT CANCEL function is a fantastic function for getting rid CW tones.
